From blued to matte finish

How costly is it to have a barrel and action changed from blued to a matte or parkerized finish? Is this what bead blasting does or is it something entirely different? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Thanks

Bead blasting is; blasting it with compessed air and tiny glass beads. Bead blasting it gives it a texrured finish. Parkerizing is a chemical treatment. So what is done is, they bead blast it first, then parkerise it. Blasting it actually removes a little of the outer steel and can make an old rough gun look great. Gunsmiths charge an arm and a leg to do it. I do it myself. Parkeizing is the way to go. It protects your gun much further than any blue. I have taken blue guns out and when I got home, they were covered in a layer of rust. I love the look of blue but it protects very little IMHO. And Park comes in different shades. Hope this helps. jerryboy

I got my whole gun bead blasted for $35, not expensive by any means. But mine is stainless so you would have to reblue which costs a little more, or you could do it yourself.

Hello,
I just wanted to say that i took my rifle(a ruger all-weather) to a NAPA parts store that has an engine shop and they bead blasted it for $5.00 i'm not saying they all will do it that cheap but it might be worth looking into. The guy done an outstanding job the only thing is i disassembled and reassembled and masked the reciever myself.

Oh, I didnt mean the blasting part was expensive.
I meant the parking job. I have had quotes from $85 to $185 LOL. You can buy a park tank for $50 and all the parkerizing chemicals for about $50 and do it your self and many times over. I just cant see paying that much for 5 minutes of blasting, and plug the bore, then set it in a park basket for a couple hours. You can almost buy new for what smiths want to park a few pieces. Not trying to be a penny pincher, but thats just insane when you know whats involved.

Actually I know some awesome methods to parking and gunkoting. Brownells rocks! Parkerizing with gun-kote over it really is nice looking and tougher than any finish I have ever used.....

OK -these are new! I really don't care for the shiny new blued finish and was wondering how to go from blued to parkerized the easiest and cheapest way. So, if they're new they don't have to be bead blasted?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
