Update: California Shelves Ammo Tax Proposal
Senate Constitutional Amendment 12 (SA 12), a proposal to levy a five-cent tax on each round of ammunition sold in California, was shelved earlier this month. The bill’s sponsor, Democratic Sen. Don Perata, intends to revise SA 12 and reintroduce it in 2003. The tax would have financed a trauma center fund to pay the medical expenses of victims of illegal firearms use, effectively taxing sportsmen and shooters for the suffering caused by criminals. Once passed by the legislature, the bill would go before the voters.
