Im posting to see if anyone here has used a game camera to scout for coyotes. Do some of you feel this may spook the sly dog or can it be a useful tool. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I haven't used them to specifically scout for coyotes, but I have learned a little about where the coyotes are spending some time while using them to scout for deer. I have modified a few of my cameras to take infrared pictures, so there is no white flash at night. There is a very small red flash that you only see if you are looking directly at the camera. It makes a noticeable difference on deer, would think it would on yotes too.
If the coyotes respond to cameras anything like deer, the cameras would be a useful tool. Even on the deer that the flash seems to btoher, they don't leave the area, they just seem to make slight modifications to their travel routes to avoid the camera where they saw it go off.
Just be careful of the "cheap" cams, they are cheap to buy but you'll go broke buying batteries and they don't work all that well from those I've talked to.
I use them...... More for fun than anything, but you do get a good idea of when the coyotes are visiting a particular area. I dont think the flash bothers them as much as you would think. Heres one of my pics I posted here a while back, just one of several I got over the course of a night. Bear in mind, these coyote's are right on the edge of town so my guess is they arent bothered by the flash as much as a more "rural" coyote might be because they're used to seeing the flash of headlights ect....also there were the deer scraps I used for bait that might have helped to ease their minds about the fear of the flash... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
Red Lobo,
I'm curious, did you get multiple pics in a row, or did you get multiple pics during the night due to multiple visits? The yotes I have caught on camera were travelling through (running trails) and I didn't have any bait or scent out to stop them, so there were no chances for me to see how they reacted to the flash.
The other thing I will say about deer and the cameras, is that noise from the camera is a much bigger contributor to spooking them than the flash is.
Well...I set this one out Christmas eve and got pics the following times....in the AM....04:37,05:04,05:09,05:29,05:34,05:35,05:36,05:51...then they came back that evening and got pics at 20:53,22:31,22:59,23:06....
I have found that using some kind of bait is the way to go. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I use them for preadators, especially after deer season is over. Its cool getting pics of them, and helps you figure out where they are when you go to do some calling.
These are all pics from homebrew cameras. I also reccommend hagshouse if you are interested.
Judging by the tracks in the snow, the grey and red fox turn tail and get the heck out of dodge when the pic is taken. Not so with the cats. I have multiple pics of the same cat (camera goes off every 10 seconds) on a few diffrent occasions.
Coyotes, by my experience, are the toughest to get pics of. If they even see the camera on the tree, they are outta there, and I have never gotten a second pic of a coyote. Again, judging by the tracks in the snow they get the heck outta dodge when the flash goes off.
