Getting close to that time....

Last week of May and first part of June is coming up soon....
Almost time for the annual pilgrimage to Montana in the pursuit of gophers and PD. Ed (my Army / Hunting buddy) and I are looking at the trip.

As of right now, I'm trying to work out a "new" load for the 1-12" Twist 26" Satern barreled AR (.223 Rem chambered, so yeah the short throat) that I setup for just such occasions. My normal load is 27.2grs of H335 pushing a 50gr Speer TnT bullet at mag length.
This year I'm exploring a different powder... H322 pushing the same pill (bullet). I did go out and "pressure test" some charges, looks like about 25.5grs of H322 is the upper end.
In the ladder test of pressure test I thought I seen about two nodes that might produce a effective load. One at 23.4 to 23.7grs which is a narrow band, the other is at the upper end at 24.9 to 25.5grs which seems to be worth exploring. Pet loads of that combo welcomed. The other new device for this setup, is the addition of a Otter Creek Polonium 5.56 can.

( why the change in powder?
a. H335 is working well in the 6mm Rem Ackley.
And most importantly b. I was given 2 lbs of H322, which was older but still sealed, so it needs to be used. Never hurts to have a alternate powder work up.
Not to mention the saving of 2ish grs each round yeah, more bullets per Lb.)

The walking rifle will be the Savage MkII (Heavy Barrel 16.5" with a OCL Titanium 22 Can) 22LR, with the usual diet of Standard Velocity. Just need to lay in 400-500 rounds.

Ed wound up with a new to him .222 Rem, which he, and I was on range yesterday, his bolt gun was turning in a respectable .75" 10 shot group at 100 yards. He wanted me to shoot his "new to him" gun, I flat out refused, stating it would lead to me hunting down a .222 Rem. We both laughed at that. When we got done at the range with my limited pressure loads, we stopped at my house. I pulled out the Savage Mk II, he asked you taking that? yep was my response. I pulled the can and placed it in his hands he was like "holy crap that is light, I'll have to take my Win 121, I can use your can". We then discussed "maybe" some stopping in Wyoming, although not sure of where.

Edited to add later:
so, went to the range did some more load work with the .223 AR, 25.5 gr H322 pushing a 50 gr Speer, offered the best group right a 1MOA. Velocity was 3350 Average. Should be able to tweak that in bullet seating depth for minute of gopher. If not back to H335 I go.

Quick and dirty DOPE card of that bullet (Speer 50gr TnT) doing 3350 FPS ( the usual ranch that we go to the terrain limits the shots to 400 yard)

Not sure which side but probably the northern side. Seeing how I'm a passenger with my buddy Ed we will take his car. I know he is planning the route.
I'm pretty sure we will hit Cody either on the way up or back.

I've got the actual load workup on another thread in the Reloading section.
Didn't find joy with the Speer and H322, so switching bullets.

I've been in Wyoming, Montana and Colorado many times and the amount of prairie dogs there is stunning.

Before making any trips out west, I had been told to bring 2 rifles. A long range rifle and a short range rifle. Also, no less than 1000 rounds per rifle. I thought this was wishful thinking of some misguided soul....until I witnessed it for myself. In certain areas, it's like a Whack-a-Mole game....for 600+ yards.

If I shot 15 groundhogs in eastern Ohio, in 1 day, I would be having a "hot day". I can clearly see how someone could "washout" a barrel in a rifle by shooting it too much and not letting it cool down. There can be so many prairie dogs in 1 location, it's unbelievable.

bad news... the AR upper is tore apart (not my only one, but the only slow twist I have currently)...
I found that one of the setscrews for the gas block had vibrated loose. Causing a gas leakage, Pulled the handguard and barrel nut on the existing setup. Probably will use the extra YHM shorter handguard in it's place. I came to this reasoning for the ability to view the block, showing if this happens again in the future. I thought this one had a adjustable gas block nope. So now to locate one. Perfect time to scope the barrels' throat while it's out, lost the rounds count on it, but she has made the trip twice prior to the upcoming one.

Always went to great pain NOT to roast the barrel, we always kept to a regiment of one shooter on deck to keep from roasting our barrels as a group. But doesn't mean that she could not be toast.

If I have to rebarrel the only tinge of remorse will be the act of finding a new slow twist barrel, can be a PITA at times. Not undoable but a pain nevertheless.

As in the past I was planning on at least two rifles, this year the AR and the Savage MK II in 22lr for the walking hunt and close up shots.

UPDATE:

Wooo hoo... just scoped the barrel about two hours ago
Results:
Throat: NOOO fire cracking/gator checkering. The Smith was amazed as he recall when I set the barrel in, he was Like outside you Ed and few other former Army guys I would say it only had 400 round based on the throat. He then asked me how many? I said well I kinda lost count but around 2500 or so is my rough guess.
His thoughts:
He was like you still recall how to lap a barrel? yep was my response, He was like yeah probably wouldn't hurt at about 1" before gas port area to 4" from muzzle. If that fails I could do a slight recrown. Smooth the bore out a bit is my advice with some lapping to smooth the tool chatter.

He asked what my normal loads was Varget? ....... nope 27.5 grs H335 with 50-55gr Varmint bullet. usually Speer or Noslers. he shook his head "unbelievable". I grinned yeah the old WC844 (@28.5grs approx) (Civilian H335 @27.5grs) load is a pretty close duplicate to the M193 round.

But the barrel is back in the upper, decided to do a shorter hand guard that exposes the gas block so I can keep a eye on it.
I did stop by the local hardware store picked up a 8-32 setscrew to replace the one that fell out 180 degrees across from the gas port. I'm caulking that up to why I was having "issues".... as it was actually venting.

Now to pick up an adjustable gas block, and new gas tube... which I was kind of holding off on depending on barrel verdict. As one of the replacement I was looking at had a .936" diameter gas block. The current barrel is a .750" diameter.

Before I left I asked him to get in a Remington .250" recoil lug, he grinned said here I have one. Then the discussion of when to come by so we could headspace the 6mm CM barrel I got from him on the 722 action. I had pulled the factory barrel (august 1957 date code) a week ago... depending on time it takes to do the stock that one or the 6mm Ackley may go in case a bit more range is needed.

I was a Sargent-AF. The nostalgia makes me laugh. It ended 50 years ago. Discharge day was the happiest day in my life and the DD Form 214 is something I'm more proud of than the BA degree. I can see where shooting a rifle can be nostalgic. It's like a brotherhood.
