getting firearms to alaska

i just got a job in alaska, and i'm trying to figure out how to get everything moved up there. i had thought of taking one standard checked bag with my clothing, etc., and one checked case with guns in it. but from what i've been able to find out, the airlines will only accept two long guns or 5 handguns. i want to get 3 long guns and one or two revolvers up there.

so, how do i ship guns up there? or am i just wasting my time trying to figure this all out?
 
Would recommend sending them in a lockable case and insure them. When I shipped mine from overseas back to the U.S. had to have them in a non-firing capacity (Barrel removed ((shotgun))bolt removed bolt action). Other than that pretty simple. Cost is the same a sending a package of the same size and dimensions. No extra fees because it is a firearm.
 
To send them UPS to Alaska is Air freight only. It will be expensive. I have never heard of the non-firing capacity of taking them apart. I would recommend a lockable case covered with a cardboard box to fit. Don't mark anything on them that flags them to be firearms.

I fully agree with Steve on locking case @ the cardboard. Might be better to send them a different way than UPS or FedX. Maybe air freight through Alaska Airlines might work better. I certainly wouldn't put much trust in UPS with my weapons.
 
Contact the BATF first and make sure about all the details that have to be covered. No sense in winding up in legal trouble because they say you had to do something one way and you thought you could do it a different way.

When I went to Alaska they didn't have as many restrictions as now and just took all of them with me (checked baggage of course).
 
You can priority mail your long guns to yourself if you already have and Alaska address. Take your handguns with you on the plane as checked bagage. Regards, Byron
 
Driving handguns through Canada is a bit tricky. My understanding is that it is possible but requires sealed, by Canadian authorities, containers that better still be sealed when you exit Canada.

A lot simpler to just ship them all to yourself by common carrier, no FFL needed on either end.

driving is not an option. i'll be a few hundred miles west of the road system.

the airlines aren't very helpful in the move, though. northwest lets you take two long guns or five handguns, so without the ability to ship my revolver to myself, i will probably just send the long guns up, and check the revolver. and it gives me the added convenience of another carry-on.
 
There is a recent post here on the site regarding UPS. I would sooner sell my rifles down here and buy new ones up there and ship via those scum bags at UPS. The thread might be over in the hunting section.
