The yearly warzone that Washington turns into during the large game rifle season has finally wrapped up. I finally feel it is safe enough to be out calling without having to dodge bullets and bumpers.
I only had a few hours this morning to hunt but sometimes that’s all it takes. First three stands of the morning were all blanks with not a peep from any coyotes.
The fourth stand of the morning I got set up on an area that in years past I have always seen coyotes but they always got the best of me. Today however, I would get the best of one.
I started out with some distress sounds of nutty nuthatch for 3 minutes, cottail sauce for 3 minutes and nothing showed up. I switched things up and went to some howls only to have the same results.
Then I decided to switch things up again and went to pound town and another coyote fight. At 13 minutes a spotted a coyote standing on top of a rock bluff about 300 yards out.
After scanning the area for danger he made the choice that all was clear and headed my direction. When he got to about 200 I shut the call off to prevent him from coming to hard and fast. He eventually checked up at 120 yards for another scan of the area, which I cut short with a shot from my .260 rem.
