Ghillie Suites

Ok guys, after watching the sniper specials on the History channel last week, wondered how many of you have and use a ghillie suite? Also, would like some real stories if you have any. I was thinking of making one in snow camo, any ideas?

I made one suit and some pieces for my guns and cd player. You can puy complete suit, kits or like I did make one. I found a place that sells 20# spools of jute material. It's a spool of chord.Got some netting from a local surplus store. Then I attched it to desert BDU's. Works great. The kits sell for about $40-$50. They come with about 7# of jute. The 20# spool cost me $25. The biggest draw back--it takes forever. If you like needle point, you'll love it. I'll try to get some pictures up. Hope this helps.

Make one, they are awesome!
I had a dog walking all around me barking while I was on a stand one evening, he could smell me but he could not find me. He was so close that he steped over my feet. I made mine by sewing strips of camo burlap onto a 3/4 length jacket then I went to Wally World and got some raffia (looks like dead grass) and tied long pieces of that into the burlap strips. This year I'll be looking for more goodies to put on it.

I bought my shaggy suit. It works very well! You do need to watch out for barbed wire fencing, it'll trip you every time you try to step over it!
I typically carry the suit, rolled up, out to my calling area and put the cape on once I'm settled on a location.

Well My idea for a type of guille suit I came up with and which I like very well is, I went to wal-mart and bought a 12' by 8' piece of 3-d light weight camo netting which has little leaves all cut out and looks 3-d . I cut it down to size with a hole in center to fit my head through and when going out I just have it folded up in my day pack and went I get out I slip it over my head and just let it drape down over me, which I have it cut to reach almost to the ground while standing. When I'm sitting it will cover me comletly and I usally even drap it over the butt of rifle also. Its super light so even in warm weather its not hot and if I wear coveralls its no problem to slip over everything.
I sometimes just leave it on while going to next stand even. At a coat of only less than $20.00 its hard to beat and very evective.

this is a picture of my son wearing a guillie suit I made.It is made of camoed burlap with stips of different colored burlap sewed onto it , also you can add foliage from the environment you are hunting inand that really makes a difference in how well it blends in.As mentioned above you do need to look out for fences.

Hey,
That's one fine looking boy. Heck with the suit. Looks like he's on his way to being one great hunting partner. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a ghillie suit, but I am afraid to use it here in Iowa(used it in AZ).With so many hunters in the woods, beginning in September,I do not trust that someone may see me moving around in the timber and take a shot because of "SOMETHING MOVED", type of senario.
It is a serious problem that there are so many stupid hunters that shoot just because they saw something move.Almost every day on Outdoors Unlimited there is a news report on this.
So,be carefull out there ghillie guys.

Do you have any pics of your ghillie cover? Sounds like a good idea I was just wondering what the dimensions were after you cut it to shape. Is it basically a 3-d poncho type affair. Could you explain the dimensions a little better?

Okay, you all are beginning to talk me into wanting a gillie suit, may just have to try makin one and see how I like it.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

mikegranger,
I went to a local department store, went into the women's section and purchased a 3X white sweatshirt and 2X sweatpants. Wal-Mart had a white ski mask (in women's wear) and Anderson's (a hardware store) had white cloth (jersy type) gloves that I pulled over my existing gloves.

I used a Sharpie permanent marker to draw some twigs and branches on it, to break up my outline.

It all cost about $17.00!

I LOVE snow camo! I have NEVER seen any other camo pattern work as well. I believe that most animals are looking for a dark figure and that's the reason for snow camo being so successful.

I know I've mentioned it before. One night after dinner at our house with my folks, mom left her white sweat jacket. Needless to say it instantly became my new snow camo jacket. The only problem is the backwards zipper!!!

ghillie suits and leafy wear camo is awesome. be sure that if you are going to be shooting from the prone position that you DO NOT sew burlap or jute on the front side of the suit, as it tends to catch underneath you and tear or hang you up. also, don't overlook ghillie suits for big game hunting, mostly archery, although i have seen then used w/ great success on PRIVATE land antelope hunts. i always roll my suit up and take it along, since moving with it can be dangerous to the ever so common "sound hunters". if you are considering whether or not to get/make a ghillie suit, the answer is yes. they are amazing.

Hey Okbow 68
I'll try to measure it soon. I bascially took the piece of material I bought measure to find the center and thats wear I cut a small hole big enough for me to slip my head through. I then stood up and had wife trim all the way around to lenght of just ablove my ankles. Im short so a taller guy would make it cut a hair longer.

I use ghillie suits exclusively. They have worked relly well for me. I have had coyotes jump over my legs and then stop and turn to look at me trying to figure out what I was. The ghillie also allows you to get away with a little more movement than you can do without the suit. I am convinced that breaking up your outline like a ghillie suit does is the best camo. You just can't break up an outline with your noggin sitting on your shoulders with regular camo or a baseball hat. Any coyote worth his weight will see that outline and shy away. I think they relate man to that human outline and danger.
I have built my own ghillie suit using the bush rag kit and I have also bought one from Rancho Safari who make the Shaggie suit. I like the Shaggie better as it is easier to put on and rolls up with a shoulder strap to carry to my stand. The Shaggie also has arms and an attached hood. After putting one together I don't mind paying the extra money to have someone else build it. The Shaggie has just come out in a ultra light model that weighs about half of the original but looks the same. They go for $150 and are well worth it. I am sure there have been some coyotes I have gotten only because my ghillie suit kept me from being seen. Bruce

mikegranger,
The reason I went into the Women's section is that it's the only section of any store that I'd been in that had white oversized clothes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The cost for painter pants, shirts and coveralls are pretty high. The "throw-away tyvek suits are too noisy...like a wind breaker type material.

My BIG question was why in blue blazes would a woman that's over weight, want to wear WHITE in the first place? You'd look like a giant marshmellow or the Michelin Man.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57
