Giant Coyote? What do you think?

My friend shot this animal opening morning of Missouri deer season and thought it looked like a funny coyote. He called the Missouri DNR and they took it for some testing. The Department of Fish and Wildlife services harassed him one evening about shooting a protected wolf and now the Missouri DNR said it is just a large coyote. It weighed 104 lbs and the head was bigger than most peoples heads. What do you think it is? I have never seen a wild wolf but have seen and shot coyotes and most of the coyotes I shoot are in the 40lb range I would guess. I am going to start weighing them for my records.

I'm saying its a timberwolf- cross of coyote and wolf. The DNR doesn't want to raise any flags- so they are calling it a yote.
 
I'm no expert and I'm not even sure that a coyote and wolf can cross breed, but if they did, I think the offspring would look pretty much like the animal shown in the these pics...The rear end, particularly the tail looks coyote like, but head and face both in shape and coloration look really wolf like....

With all the controversy surrounding wolves right now and with Missouri being one of the nation's premier whitetail deer hunting states, I'm thinking that the last thing the DNR would want to do would be to cry wolf...

I'm sure if there are wolves or wolf coyote crosses running around in Missouri the DNR would like to see them gone, however they may well be smart enough to realize that if they say that wolves are there, the anti's will come out of the woodwork crying for protection...If they say it was just a coyote, the hope would be that any other "huge coyotes that look like wolves" will be eliminated by hunters quietly and without opposition...

And if the animal was a cross, they can safely say that it was a coyote...
 
So if this is a coyote according to DNA results, does it go down as a US/world record?

It does look a lot my friends dog. I'm curious if the foot print is simular shaped like a dog (wider) or coyote (longer)?
 
I just looked and relooked at those pictures.

Not sure exactly what it is but those teeth are in great
shape and the toenails look real short for something thats
been running wild.
 
I have raised Huskies for years and it sure does look like some of the dogs I have had over the years.A big Husky would weigh 75lbs but the Malamutes seem to be a heavier dog.
