golden coyote

I've shot one target-of-opportunity coyote while groundhog hunting, and seen others in the woods. Last Sat I was deer hunting with a flintlock, and after seeing no deer all day decided to try my distressed rabit call I bought last fall. I had used it a few times but never called one in and didn't really expect to this time, but after about 20 minutes of occasional calling I heard something rustle leaves to my left and looked over my shoulder to see a coyote no more than 30 feet away. I could see him, but I couldn't get turned around enough to shoulder and aim the longrifle properly, and as a result missed him as he saw me and took off.
Thing is, this critter was as golden colored as any retreiver I've ever seen--at least the head, chest, and shoulders I got a clear view of. Bright gold. Definitely not a fox, and don't tell me I almost shot someone's dog, this was a coyote.
I've seen one mostly grey with gold-red highlights on the sides and back, but I didn't know they came in solid gold.

There are some unusually colored coyotes. I've seen pictures of gold, cream, black and grey coyotes. The only unusual one I've seen in person was a red and cream colored one. I didn't kill it either. It was at 10 feet away at times but kept brush between it and me. It was early in the season though. Just as well I didn't kill it because I'd rather shoot it later in the year when the fur is prime. A coyote like that should at least be tanned if not mounted.

Boys, the one I saw seemed to be a brighter gold than either pic, with no white on the chest or lower jaw. Of course, I didn't get time for careful observation. Next time I hope I can post a pic.

Just realized that my last post was kind of random. I am going to try and go after yotes this weekend where I saw the black one. 2 of the guys that work on that property have seen him a few times actually.
