GoldWave Question (Lionho?)

Hello again Guys/ Gals,
My question is, when using goldwave to edit a sound file, is there a way to display or view the frequency content of the file? I'd like to be able to set a filter to eliminate a specific frequency, or a narrow band. Thanks, Steve

This would apply if you don't know the specific freq. of the noise you're trying to eliminate. thx

Open the file you want to clean with Goldwave.

Select / highlight an area on the sound display that contains the background noise or frequency you are looking to eliminate.
When you have it selected, click on "edit" and then "copy".

This copy's the selected portion to your clipboard.

Then select or highlight the entire sound clip because you want to clean the entire file.
Click on "effects", "filter" and then "noise reduction".

The noise reduction window opens. Make sure that only "use clipboard" is selected, and click "ok".

What your doing by selecting and copying the portion of the clip with the bad sound is showing Goldwave what you want removed.
Then your selecting the entire clip because you want Goldwave to clean the whole clip.
When you get to the noise reduction area Goldwave uses the portion you have copied as a sample of what to filter from the entire clip.

There are a couple of different versions of Goldwave, but either does this pretty well.

In the Win98 version (my old Thinkpad laptop with a primo sound card and this version of GW is mostly why I'm still using it) first you've got to have the GW Device Controls window open, select this through the drop-down Tools menu. Next, right click on the upper left Device Controls icon to open up the Properties window, and set Graph to Spectrogram, check Show Axis, and set Window Function to Kaiser 7. (The other refresh settings that I've got set up may be default, I don't remember, but they're LED hold time 500ms, frames/s 20, and fade time 750ms.)

I've also got a later 5.10 version of GW on a Windows 2000 machine here, but don't use it much for the noisy soundcard as compared to the laptop. Hence I haven't played around with the controls as much...

Okay, I'm back. Just now discovered that v5.10 has this too, only you can set up left and right windows in the (renamed) Control tool independently (right-click anywhere in either window). For what you're looking to do Spectrogram will probably most useful of the many choices here, too. After you've selected it or whichever style, it's then necessary to click on the Properties above the list, and check Show Axis to get the calibration of the graph. Also, find that Vertical Control console style (choose from "Window" drop-down picklist) gives a nicely expansive and detailed view of the graph.

Many Thanks. I believe the spectrogram will be exactly what i'm after. I don't have time to mess with it now, but will check into it tonight. I'm trying to clean up a tape recording- pretty much a lost cause.

Sure is nice having knowledgeable guys around that are willing to help a guy out!

Thanks to both R.R. & Lionho!!

Hey, seems I just got something out of the deal, too.--River Runner's trial-filter-by-proxy technique is a new one on me. Thanks, Jim!

Happy New Year,
