Good Air Rifle? Opinions?

I'm looking to invest in a new air rifle mainly for killing rabbits, squirrels, and birds. I'd rather not exceed the price of $350-$400. I have a Gamo Whisper right now, but I can't get any type of grouping with it. I'd prefer not a real loud one, as I might shoot in my neighborhood. Thanks Guys

I have two gamo's a whisper and a big cat, the scope that came with both of them were junk, bought new scopes and did alittle better, but what i found with mine is i had to put about 700 rounds threw both of them before i could get a tight pattern,i've had my big cat for two years and its quarter grouping at 25yrds im still breaking in the whisper as its about a 4in grouping at the same distence. you try diffrent weight pellets to see what works better, i just ordered a benjamin trail np 1100 but was told the same thing, 300-500 shots before it groups well

All right. I haven't put that many round through mine, but I've put about 150-200. I'll just go get a box of pellets and shoot them through and see what happens afterwards

I handed my pellet guns to my two nephews and said ill get them back in a few months, after 200 rds you should start to get a tighter pattern i would think, if the stock scope is still on that might be it to, like i said the scope that came on mine where junk and never would stay sighted in, i bought cheap BSA scopes for mine and that made a huge diffrence, ive only ever owned gamo's so i dont have anything to compair to, ill let you know in a month what i think of the benjamin. but i love my gamo's once they get broke in

How loud is a pcp exactly or does it vary between the guns. If I got one would I be able to just re-fill it with an air compressor or would I have to use something special? If they are loud is there anyway I could make one quieter? I was looking at them and if I got one it would probably be the gamo dynamax.

I have the gamo big cat and it has worked well for me... I killed a jackrabbit with it at 50 yds before so it has some knockdown too. I was able to hit a tack at 25 yards. Though the scope that comes with it is junk.

You need to check out the Colibri 22 ammo, 'Super Colibri' is what you want, 20 grains at 500 FPS. Extremely quiet, effective. Read the reviews at Midwayusa. I have dispatched up to a possum with them.

A pcp can be made to be quiter than a springer, the benjamin maurader for instance is very quite, my jack haley 308 has a louder pop I cant shoot it in my back yard mostly because of the power it puts out. The benjamin maurader i have 2 of them one in 22 the other in 25 cal the 22 is silent the 25 is a bit louder, usually the pellet hitting the target is louder than the shot of either of my mauraders. I use a hand pump made for filling these guns its the cheapest way to start out but I have been getting into the bigger guns lately and am planning on getting one in .45 caliber this year so I am planning on going carbon tank and a high pressure air compressor. break barrels are cheaper but often are less accurate due to the fact that the barrel is moving and the scope does not attach to the barrel. pcp guns are pretty sweet, i would definitely check them out. Gamo makes one and benjamin makes several low price guns, FX makes some really nice higher quality rifles.

a regular shop compressor only pumps up to about 180 psi. these pcp airguns need to be filled to 3000 psi. scuba tanks or a carbon fiber tank will do. i have a benjamin marauder in 25 cal, and have taken crows out to 70 yards. it shoots around 900 fps with a 25 grain pellet is giving me over 40 ft lbs of energy. a rabbit only needs 3 ft lbs of energy to kill. I am a commercial diver and already owned scuba tanks. the gun sells for under $500 and can be had refurbished for around $325. my 25 puts holes thru an inch of pine @50 yrds. and best of all, its american made!!!

and on other forums where members list their arsenals, almost every one of them who owns hi end air guns (over $1000) also list the benjamin marauder as one they own!

here ya go, Go this route. Both guns are hand pump friendly.
The first fill is the worst after that just top off every 15-20 shots and its simple
First up is my Benjamin Marauder in .25, Customized up and pushing at 45 FPE but with a 5 min spring swap I am pushing over 60 FPE
Second is a Bam 51 it is a Chineese verion of a Daystate
This has been modified up to a .25 cal also and is pushing near 50 FPE and also adjustable from 30 FPE - near 70 FPE
Both guns shoot dime groups at 40 yards and capable of huntng any small game animal out to 100 yards and Coyotes out to 50 with head shots
Also both guns have muzzlebrakes and are very quiet!

I been hunting cottontail and squirrel for 3 years now with the Gamo Big Cat shoots a .177 PBA pellet at 1250 fps. I have a Field and Stream 4x32 on it for extra 50.00 bucks and its accurate out to 60 yards with decent groups. Just make sure if you get one that you ditch that piece of junk scope that comes with it.
