Goofy Wisconsin Laws

Looking through the Wisc Small Game Regs I found a few regs that I feel need addressed here is the list.

1.It is illegal to possess while hunting, shot shells loaded with shot larger than no.BB from June1-Dec2(or June1-Dec16 in Zone T or Metro DMUs).
Personally I like #4 buck for the close in coyotes or fox.

2."Use of lights" Shining is prohibited as explained on page 15. However, a flashlight may be used at the point of kill for racoon, fox and unprotected species(But not for coyote)after the animal is located to shoot the animal and find your way while walking.
Sorry I'd like to be sure that it is a coyote and not some border collie.

This is just 2 of the many different regs that limit predator hunting in Wisconsin. I feel that if you are targeting coyote and you live in Wisc we should voice our opinions in regards to these regs. Contact your local DNR office and find out when public meetings will be held and then give your view.

Hello...to address your concerns as follows;......

I believe that there are NO firearm restrictions when it come to hunting coyotes. At least that what they (DNR) tell me down here. I can legally use my 30-06 if I wished to...Although some restriction do apply...like Bong rec area...shotgun only.

Also..and this is the biggy...about the use of lights at night for coyotes....bill # AB 374 has been in committe in Madison for the last 5/6 months. There was some forward activity earlier this month. I think it moved on to another committe. This bill was introduced by our local rep....Scott Gunderson and a few others. Scott assures me that it will pass soon, allowing us to hunt coyote at night with the use of lights. Sanity will prevail......

I agree that we can use any rifle caliber for coyote, but the issue seems to be buckshot. Don't have my small game regs handy (in the van), but I also think we need to be able to use 4 buckshot on coyotes. In fact, I just wrote the DNR asking what the procedure is on proposing a regulation change. I would think that if you want to get this changed, you need to get started NOW to make it in time for the spring advisory meetings.

 It's supposed to reduce deer poaching.

That "No lights at the point of kill" for 'yotes I always thought was stupid. You can use a light to locate, but ya got to turn off the light before you pull the trigger? What dumb-ass is responsable for that rule?

 Again, probably a law some retard thought would prevent poaching.

Here is some page # and paragraphs from the 03 small game and general hunting regs booklet.P12 para 3, P15 para 3, P25 Night hunting paragraph. I can't agree with you more John we due need to address these issues and we also need to have the DNR learn how to phrase some of this wording so as not to create such a confusing hand book.

Well I look at it this way...Dec 2 is just a few days away. That means I will be able to use #4 Buck for coyote IF I wish to do so. Prior to this date I have been using my .223. Works great too !!
Also starting tomorrow, Dec 1st, you will be able to hunt fox and coyote at night...BUT you can only use a light for fox ? How STUPID !!
Like I stated before...this will be changed.

I hear ya on the confusing wording. First coupla read throughs on the deer regs, I thought you could take a buck with your regular buck tag in the CWD zone, and not have to "earn" your buck tag (which is what you have to do).

John

Now, gotta go find some buckshot.

Hey, folks from Wisconsin!!!!!!

AB 374 DOES address the glitch iin the law that occured in 1980. It happened when they put a closed season on coyotes in the north to protect the wolves, thus making them a protected species.

I wrote a resolution to the Conservation Congress which passed in a couple counties and was approved by the Cons. Congress as a whole at the May convention. We also lobbied the Assembly which produced it as AB 374.. As far as I know right now, it has been read at the Assembly and most likely will come for a full vote during the special session that has been called by our beloved Governor.

That about all that I know about it right now. If I hear anything I will post it here. My best advice would be to contact your representatives and ask their support. The wardens want it, we want it, and it was a glitch in the law created in 1980. Given the safety issues of identifying the target at night, as well as the influx of wolves, it would be far better to be able to use lights for coyotes. I had to quit hunting an area at night over here in the La Crosse area due to bona fide wolf sightings last year. Could be a very costly mistake that could be prevented if AB 374 gets passed!!!!!!!

So....get on the phone and ask for rapid passage of AB 374!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks 22mag! Got a call last night from one of the delegates on the Fur Harvest Committee of the Conservation Congress. They are taking up my resolution in their meeting this Friday in Stevens Point. I will also be there but will be in the Migratory Committee but told him to pull me out if they need me.

I would suspect they will support it and I asked
him to ask the committee to voice their support to the Legislators in support of AB 374. We'll get this done somehow!

WI A.B. 374 Coyote Hunting

Bill Number: A.B. 374
Bill Sponsor(s): Rep. Scott Gunderson (R, 83)
HSUS Position: Oppose

Last Action: 6/3/03: Introduced and referred to the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources.

Allows the use of flashlights while hunting coyotes. The bill would make it difficult to distinguish coyote hunting with a flashlight from illegal deer shining with a flashlight.
