Got a call about some lamb killers (edited, added video)

My preacher called me Friday evening. He had some coyotes that had found a way into his lamb pens, and over several days had killed 5 of his babies. He plugged the hole up in the fence but wanted me to go try and kill the coyotes since his pens were right at his mothers house, and they were coming in her yard at night as well.

I was not able to go that night because the wind was totally wrong for the tight setup there. Saturday night the wind was right and I grabbed one of my calling partners who is a solid shooter and we headed over.

We parked on the side of the house next to the barn and hid the pickup next to some tractors. As we got out of the pickup we heard several coyotes fire up howling about 400-500 yards away in the direction we expected them to be. We hopped the fence and moved roughly 150 yards closer to them and set up next to a mesquite, standing with tripods.

I pulled out a little open reed distress and threw out some medium volume, gravelly jack distress. It was only about 3 minutes later we saw a pair coming through the mesquites. They were coming in pretty good, but every time they stopped one or the other was behind a bush with no clear shot. Finally they stopped about 100 yards out with both in the clear. We did a quick count, 2 rifles barked, and both hit the ground. The male was decent size at 28.4 lb, the female was fairly small at 25.5 lb.

As close as they were to the pens snd as quick as they responded I feel pretty sure we got the ones we were looking for. I really like doing that type of calling, targeting specific animals that are causing trouble, and helping people out.

Nice work. I call a sheep farm as well and on numerous occasions have received the same phone call. And from a beef farmer. And from a couple dairy farmers. And from a horse farm.

The coyotes are just doing what they do I guess? It gives me a good feeling as well to just do what I do in a way that directly helps someone.

I agree. They do what they do, which sometimes means I do what I do. Good way to put it. Mostly I deal with cattle. We don’t have as many sheep and goats in our part of the country.

We have had some trouble at our house too though. My daughter shows lambs and goats, and sometimes the coyotes come right here in the edge of town. I have killed a few where I got up out of bed in the middle of the night and shot them from my front yard with thermal.
