GPS datum vs GPS coordinates -- NEED HELP

Gotta question for you guys . The GPS unit that I am running is the Magellan Meridian Gold.

A guy i work with made a book with all of the guzzlers (water holes)in the Clark County, Nevada region. He doesnt work here anymore and i cant get ahold of him to ask him this question so I hope someone can shed some light on this.
In this book he has each guzzler marked with GPS coordinates The east has an 7 digit humber and the N has a 7 digit number as well, with no spaces, period, apostrophe's. I am trying to set each guzzler has a waypoitn and running into a problem.

He told me to run the WGS84 Datum which I am able to run. when I set it up Lat/Lon is the default which don’t match the numbers in the book, so I then set the coordinate system up as UTM now the numbers are really close but the East has 8 digits on the GPS handheld compare to the 7 shown in the “book” although the North Matches perfectly. I messed with it and plugged numbers and was able to get the waypoint put in and it seems like it is 3 or 4 miles off.

On my GPS the 8 digit number is broken down by 2 digits a space then 6 digits (example xx xxxxxxE) on the map it looks like this xxxxxxxE

sounds like he is using Military Grid Reference System. Is there another number and letter in front of it like 11T or 13P if so then he is using MGRS. It is designed for the miltary but anyone can learn it. You can use it on topo maps. you just have to draw the grid lines yourself. If you know someone close that is prior Army have him take a look and he should be able to tell you. good luck

I figured it out the 8 digits are really 9 digits the first 2 are the zone in my case I am in zone 11 and the space is really a zero then follows by the next 6 digits.

EASYGPS.com is a very easy and free software that can be downloaded. My friend told me about it and now I figured it out. I am not able to put way points in on my Map Send Topo in UTM format they have to be in Lat/Lon format. EasyGPS lets you put them in as UTM. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

He is using UTM's for sure. It is an easy system that allows you to break everything down by 10's. Military's uses it a lot. This is what I was taught in military cadets and the reserves. I have a hard time understanding Lat/Long myself.
