A buddy of mine gave me one that , I kid you not, found on the side of the road in front of his house.
It is a Garmin Etrex Legend.

Anybody use one of these, and I would like some details about it if possible, it didn't have the owners manual with it, but did have the car charger and USB cable with it.

I have played with it in the house a little but the brisk, sh%^ty east wind is keeping me from using it much. Hopefully the winter storm watch we have for the next couple of days will bring some fun with it.

Thanks for all your help........ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You can do searches for it on the internet. Owner's manuals and reviews will be easy to find for that GPS.

Do one thing though, check to see if there's a waypoint "HOME" or some such thing on it. Many of us with GPS units set a waypoint for home. If you can find that, you can find the owner. I'm sure he'd appreciate it back.

R Buker, I checked the waypoints but there were none saved. Also there was no owner information left, which comes up when I turn it on. My buddy has had this for a couple of years, doesn't hunt, and just found it in his pickup when he was cleaning it out to trade it off. I think he ran an ad in the local paper when he found it.
We live close to a large lake and it probably blew out or off of a boaters vehicle or boat going down the road.
Thanks for the reply.......

I have a Legend and a Garmin Rhino; which has the same features as the Legend, plus a radio. The Legend is very easy to use. I believe that if you go the Garmin website, you can download the Legend manual. I use it for all types of hunting, especially grouse hunting in Northern Wisconsin. I turn it on when I leave the car and then start cross-country. I never get lost. I also plot a waypoint when I get a grouse flush. When I return to Wisconsin, I hit the areas with the most flushes. It kind of works as my journal. It holds plenty of waypoints, so I still have some to spare.

I use an Etrex Vista, big brother to the legend. More internal memory to minimize time loading maps.

There is not a USB cable, only serial so loading maps is slow. Check ebay for cables, there are straight data cables, and cables with power and data 12VDC and 120VAC.

Great unit. I have used it alot in the past 3 yrs.

I use a Garmin ETrex Legend - if you mark gates, blinds and water, it is all you need to find your places at night (when everything looks different)

I use the ETrex Legend for both work and play. Great little unit for the money, expecially if ya have one given to ya. About the only dislike I have, or had, about mine is the stock maps really lack detail. I use Garmin Roads and Recreation maps in mine and the detail is awesome. I'm a woodland firefighter so ya can imagine mine gets alot rough use, had the screen go out one time but Garmin promptly fixed it, other than that, no problems. I think you'll like it once ya get use to using one.

A buddy of mine is the pormotions manager at Lowrance Electronics and last year he gave me a I FINDER HUNT. I love that thing, he even gave me a holder and external antenna to use in my truck or on my Polaris 700 sportsman. I can mark my stands, rubs, trails, food plots, scrapes literaly everything. It really helps you to see the big picture. I even used it one real dark morning to help me get to a stand I put up the night before and then marked w/ my GPS. it took me right to the stand and I could not see for crap. I have only had the lowrance product but I'm pretty sure most of the GPS all do pretty much the same thing.

i had the garmin rhino 120 for a couple years and it worked great untill i lost it somewhere in the creek /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. This fall i upgraded to the Rhino 530 ,it comes with a color screen (wich makes it alot easyer to read the terrain on the maps) and it has alot more memory. It also has a rechargable battery pack that works for a very long time in real cold weather. I use it to run my trap line and save all my waypoints ,its real accurate. Once i used it when me and my dad were flying over some beaver huts and as soon as we would fly over a hut i would mark a way point . When we landed the super cub we got out and fallowed the gps right to the huts , very accurate.

I have the Garmin etrax Blue in Color, love it, need to work with or any other to get used to operation. Hunt and use for ATV with handbar mount from Ram. Never had a problem and have beat it to death.

Travel all over Alaska and use a simple Garmin etrex with hard copy maps of wherever I go, that way if the GPS craps out I pull out the compass and still have my maps. I had a buddy who used one of the expensive Garmins with all the whiz bang gizmos to plot all of his wolf traps that were spread out over 100 miles, he ended up going back to his little etrex, to my knowledge he has never lost a trap. I guess it is all in what you want, but I agree with longcruise and bigben, always have your compass.

Garmin etrax the yellow one I belive it is the basic model and I have used the heck out of it. One thing I did just to learn all the ins and outs of using a gps is by going to the web site geocache.com and found a few hidden treasures there is some all over the country just put in your zip code to find some in your area. Basically I wanted to see if I could do it and it taught me alot of the tools. I even got my kids involved so they could learn.
