If you've got alot of coyotes in an area, chances are you won't have too many foxes. They are in direct competition with each other and the coyotes usually win.

thanks for the info. tonlocus . that could be it .im surrounded by sheep and cattle ranches. the old timers tell me they never seen afox while growing up here. if you go 1/2 mile up the road to oregon there you have both reds and grays. i used to live in wenden az. that place was hell.thanks again coyotehunter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

They say that a grey will jump into a tree to get away from a coyote. A red will probably get run down and killed. Some places don't have grey fox. I think being they are such a close quarter animal they die from distemper when it gets the coon.T.20

I once found gray fox remains from where a mountain lion had killed and ate one. It was in one of my traps! Just fur, a front leg and lion tracks. The trap and front leg had been covered with some dirt & leaves.

Coyotehunter, according to the (Peterson Field Guide to Mammals), Gray fox and Red fox live in your area. If you can find them only a 1/2 mile away, I'd say you have them. try hunting the grays at night with a hand held light ( legal ), but you can NOT hunt reds in California day or night, Good Luck and Shoot Stright.

Danny B, do we have a decent population of grey fox where were at???? Sure would like to bag one a get him mounted. Thanks...........

Dogboy, we sure do. Lot's of gray fox in southern California, most any foothill area has grays in it. The problem is they are hard to get in the day. The area you are in is not legal to light from your truck at night, but a hand held light 9 volts or less on foot is legal, you may want to give it a try. Watch out for them cats too, they love that night shift, Good Luck and Shoot Stright. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
