Ground blinds

Anyone use a ground blind for coyote hunting? I want to take my boy next year but he fidgets a lot and I am thinking my ground blind might work.

Anyone have experience with one? Do I have to brush it in like I am deer hunting or can I just plop it down wherever like I am turkey hunting? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I would not see any problem with useing a ground blind. I have entertained the thought myself but due to what I alreadu carry in the field has kept me from doing so. Worse thing that can happen is that you get busted , could try some camo netting or something like that for concealment and portability.

BULLCAN: is there any chance of training your son, before next year, in the importance of not fidgeting? if he's going to become a coyote hunter he'll have to learn sometime. skill is better than more equipment.

A lot of it will depend on your need to get a coyote when you go out. I have been taking my son since he was 5 and he was a little fidgety in the stand in the beginning. After going many times he is much better at seven and can pretty much make it though a 15 minute stand without moving. To be honest in the beginning listening to his stories of the hunt on the way home were much more entertaining than actually getting or seeing something.

Sometimes you cant control fidgeting. I will be the first one to admit i cant sit still for over 10 minutes. I have been thinking about a ground blind for deer/coyote hunting now too. I think it would work if you know an area where there are coyotes and set it up during the day, then leave it a while and come back and use it some other night. Worth a try at least.

Forgot to add one thing. If my son is with me I will usually try to find a spot to sit with somekind of advantage for us. Sometimes I will wedge him between me and a chunk of sagebrush so it reduces the number of angles he can be seen from. Sometimes I will use rocks the same way or try to sit behind them.

Honestly, I would not get a ground blind for this instance. It may be better for your son to go hunting without one and experience what happens when you fidget around too much. If he is really into hunting, he will become better at not fidgeting and hopefully will help his hunting skills.
A lot of this is because he is anxious and should go away after time. If he sees that one gets away because of his moving around, then he will probably adjust for this.
Just my opinion.

i was wondering the same thing a few month's back so i could take my 3 year old out because every time i go to leave the house with a gun she want's to go. around december i went in to wal-mart and seen they had a two sided blind much like a light turkey blind. it come's in a mesh bag much like the folding camp chai's that are every where. it was on clearence for some thing like $10.00, so i grabed it. basicly all you have to do is pull it out of the bag and pull on the two side's and it is spread out. it can be adjusted so it can be taller if you want. i have only taken it out a few time's how ever, once alone to try and work any bug's out, just like taking any thing new to the field out and nothing came in that i seen but i had them fire up at around 150 yrd's or so, but i was hunting in heavey cover. the next time i never did see or hear any thing but the weather wasn't great. then the last time i took my 3 year old and once we started calling some a fox popped out and i tryed working him out so she could see it with out telling her, and out of no where she jumped up and said let's go dad no yotie's are comming, and off the fox went, lol. i wasn't going to shoot it since are season had closed for fox, i don't think it seen us untill she jumped up.
i think a blind like that won't realy bother them to much as long as the camo fit's the area, or it you hunt area's like i do that has some heavy cover but i set up as often as i can at the base of a mid to large size pine and set the blind in front of me and to date it blend's nice for that sort of set up. as for a full size blind like you might use to deer hunt or bow hunt turkey's, that might be a bit much for them to handel, since they hang out in the area's alot, and to just walk in and pop it up with out cover like brushing it in i feel they might catch it. now what i think might work is to pre-scout the area's you might want to hunt. once you find a spot where there is alot of yote sign, set it up and brush it in some, and then spray a cover sent on the blind to nock down some of the human scent down from setting it up. then give it 3 to 5 day's of letting it set with out being hunted out of, so the yote's will kinda get used to it some, then only hunt it with the kid. that might work but the only real way to find out is by testing it out a few different way's and see what work's and what don't. just my 2cent's. good luck
bow

Great advice, thanks for all the replies. It is not critical that I take game with him but at least seeing it would be nice. I have taken him duck hunting before and he is pretty good about sitting still.
