ground squirrel vs 30-06

The other day I was walking my property and took my 06 along for some taget practice. I ran across a ground squirrel. I shot it with a 180 gr soft point at 80 yards........there was nothing left but a smear of blood and dirt. I may be a little morbid, but I gotta kick out of it.

I'm suprised at you shooting a ground squirrel with a 30.06. Using no more than a 180 gr. bullet too...ugh! Consider yourself lucky to have taken him down with one shot. A wounded ground squirrel can be quite vicious and have been well known to lay in wait for a hunter.

I like to be sporting as much as the next guy, but I never take anything less than a .338 Mag. for ground squirrel. I feel a little "under gunned" with a .416 Rigby for coyotes, but if you carry a semi-auto 50 AE for back up, you should be in the "safe zone". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
