Groundhog Attacks!!!!

Another first occurred for me yesterday in my 61 years on this planet. I was up on the Rappahannock River shooting over some recently popped through the ground soybeans. I saw two groundhogs come out of a hedgerow together into the bean field. I waited as they worked their way out into the field. Then they separated some what. Eventually getting maybe ten or fifteen yards apart. I shot the one closest to me, the other being directly behind him, could see them both in the scope. It was a poor hit, but anchored him right there, he started flopping and flailing. I was still down in the scope as I saw the second groundhog charge the first. He should have ran to the hole at the crack of the rifle I thought. But, instead he charged the wounded hog, with soybeans still hanging out both sides of his mouth as he charged. He got to the first groundhog and started fighting and biting and slapping at him. I thought it was rather nasty for him to treat his buddy that way, so I killed him on the spot.

I have heard stories of coyotes doing this and even one tail of two gobblers acting this way after one is shot, but never thought I would see a groundhog do this. You just never know.

Good evening Pruson.

Did the second one try to fight the wounded one, or try to eat him?

I was amazed on my first Prairie Dog shoot, that when you whacked one, others would come over and devour the wounded or dead one.

Appeared to just be fighting. He died quickly, don't think he would have tried to eat the other one. Just fighting is all I saw. Friend of mine shot a gobbler with a second one nearby and the second one attacked the flopping gobbler. Flogged him good.

They are very territorial - maybe they live in a kind of truce state with their neighbors, and when one is weakened, the other attacks it.

Kinda like people

If you get a chance get the DVD's "Death in the green grass" by Richard Franklin. 50% of the ones he shoots get attacked by another ghog. It really common and fun to watch.

Ground hogs... The new "Dangerous Game" animal.

When I was a kid we used to take the dead PD's and drop them in another hole 20 yards or more from where we shot them. If you wait a while the owner of the new hole will push the dead stranger clear off the mound.

Thank you, we can't tolerate this kind of behavior
