Groundhogs / Woodchucks

We have a cabin surrounded by hundreds of holes from groundhogs. I'd like to shoot them all before I break my ankle or my neck ..... but I almost never see the little *&&(%#$s. Any ideas on how to flush them out for a shot?

In my part of the country, groundhogs are seen in the winter on warm days, I had a Cabin on the Osage river & a problem with Groundhogs, I shot quite a few & also trapped & Killed them at their holes with connibar traps, when they poke their head out the hole never knew what hit them.

I cut my teeth on hunting byt shooting many many groundhogs on my uncles farm. Ive set leg traps for them outside their holes before but 99% of them were shot. Ive stuffed dry hay into the holes, and tried smoking them out and the only way those buggers will come out is if they want to. When I had my own little farm, I just kept a rifle near the bedroom window and when I saw one in the field, up went the window and out came the rifle. In the spring, black snakes will venture into the holes and eat the babies and Ive seen SOME cats do the same. I think unless you shoot, trap, or poison them, your stuck.
 
I think your going to have to wait til spring, especially up North. They winter up and usually won't come out til it gets warm. You usually can tell by new dirt piled around the holes when they become active.
 
flush them out with warm Spring day and new grass to chew on, then do some rockchunking, big caliber style. It's like having 4-legged targets forever. But.....do save some for seed, so to speak, as you can totally eliminated them, unless that is what you are after. Then blast away!
 
You could flush them out the redneck way. If the holes are at least 100 from the wood line try pouring a couple gallons of gas down both the front and back door holes. Wait about 45 seconds, stand back and throw a piece of lighted paper in one of the holes. It will rumble the ground and the goundhog may or may not come out. If he doesn't come out you can assume the explosion killed him but he may even come out on fire so be ready to shoot before he sets the woods on fire. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif My uncle had one come out of the hole on fire a headed straight for the woods. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
