Can't help you with ruffed grouse but I hope you find a call that works, calling grouse is a lot of fun. We call hazel grouse and black grouse can also be called, but then decoys play a bigger part.
These are hazel grouse which came to the call that you see between the birds. It's a high-tone whistle. Think that sound is unique to hazel grouse though.
