Gun Camo Stencils/patterns

I was going to paint a gun of mine and I was wandering what everyone used for stencils/patterns. I want it to pass the 50'test. Lets see some pics of your camo jobs so I can get some ideas.

Thanks
Drew

I think a lot of guys use the fake leaves/flowers/ferns you buy at the craft store for making flower arrangements. They're cheap and easy, which make them attractive for this kind of use.

Here's mine, and I waited a loooooonnnnggg time before I took the rattle can to it, but I'm so happy I did. I use to have to get the gun sock out (it slipped) or try to cover it with my body (while calling and watching), etc, etc. Now I just sit it on the shooting sticks and concentrate on what I'm there for.

I used grass and ferns from the yard, plastic leaves from my wife's fake flower arrangements, and even some whoop grass from my goose layout blind. I used four colors; tan, green, gray, and black. It needs a little touch-up now and then, but mostly it just disappears in the sage or underbrush.

Color me happy.

PS. Note the colors aren't exactly true because I reduced the pixels to the point of losing true color. It makes it easier for the dial-up guys to load though, and you can still see the shading and stencil work.

Dmcgee--There is an article in the Tech Section on camo painting your rifle. There are lots of illustrations and explanations in the article. If you have any questions about it when you are done reading, PM me and I'll try to give you some answers if I can. Here is the link to that information.

Camouflaging Your Rifle

I can't remember if I placed this picture in the article or not, but this stencil was purchased at the local craft store.

Craft stores usually have many different stencils to choose from if you want to use that route. Like an earlier poster said, many folks just use the raw materials like leaves, boughs off of juniper treets, etc. to hole in front of their rifle stock when they spray darker colors over the lighter colored base paint.

Be sure you post photos when you get done with your masterpiece.

Silverfox-

I was going to use that same stencil...but figured the pink would be a dead giveaway. How's that working for ya??

Here's one of my guns. I used Krylon camo paints with a large ornamental grass from my landscaping as the stencil. I prefere a vertical pattern to help break up the horizontal line of a gun, while on shooting sticks.

I did a spray and pray woodland camo job on my 22-250. I used camo paint from walmart. Couldn't bring myself to paint barrel.

Here is mine. I did it one night when it was windy and rainy out. I was not looking for a specific patern, just looking to break up the outline and shine. I used the link posted above. For my strips I cut paterns out of yellw envelopes and taped them on. It worked.

Tony,
Are you being attacked by something in your photo? It looks like you're about to loose a finger? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tony, If you kill the danged things before trying to carry 'em back to the truck they are less likely to put the bite on ya. Sheese!

wow you guys have more guts than me...i would be cool to do, but i just couldnt try it myself. I just know i would mess it up somehow...they all look really good though.

I don't think I would mess it up, but I don't know that I could attack my rifle with a rattle can /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif...however the guns look great and I have wanted to camo my rifle as well.

jwp....i don't know that you would mess up, after all you don't want a uniform look to it, if you paint a spot that doesn't look right then say " I did it that way to help break up the lines!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

that coyote is just fighting back he figured he aint getting me without a fight. I do have a synthetic rifle stock That I painted and is starting to rub off allready but did not take my time with it. A lot of the time You do not have to paint the gun but use the 3d leafy bowhunters tape and put a few strips on. it does not have to be fully camoed just broke up some.

well thanks for the pics guys. I went ahead and did it. I think it turned out decent since i just went for it.
