I doubt you will be allowed to use the pistol. No hunting with pistols and as far as I know its even pretty difficult to get a permit to carry one for protection from bears when in remote areas. Hopefully some locals can chime in to help.

Not canadian but from what I last heard your pretty much screwed with hunting with pistols in Canada.

Sorry if I'm off topic but where and who specifically are you going with T94?

Hi there, in Canada a pistol is considered a restricted weapon and you need a special license to carry one and or own one. You are also only allowed to use a pistol on an approved range and that's it. No hunting. You will probably be stopped at the boarder and would have to surrender your weapon. I know this sucks but we have to live with it. Hope this answers your questions.

Thanks guys! I thought this was the case, but just wanted to make sure. Looks like I'll be taking the Mathews and the .338 RUM!

BigJake,

I'm hunting North of Cranbrook BC with White Swan Lake Outfitters, Jordan and Natasha Aasland.

I have often wondered about something: If you were going to Alaska to hunt bears or other game (and you are going to drive) and wanted to take a heavy caliber handgun with you for backup, how are you going to get it there if you cant take it through Canada? Have to ship it there 1st and then pick it up? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Thats about it unless you wsant to take a chance on smuggling it through Canadian territory Personally I would not take the chance if you are going on a guided hunt let them know and ship the handgun to yourself in care of the guide, or better yet if you know some one ship it to your self in care of them. Just make sure you do the shipping well in advance of when you intend to arrive. I shipped somthing to my self in care of the Hoslital I was going to in Texas I waited a week to get the package after I got to the hospital. But that was not a firearm. and it went to a VA hospital so it had to go through the mail system there and most of us know how the mail works in the military.

I ahve heard many traveling from the lower 48 to hunt (or even hike) in alaska, have a handgun shipped there, then shipped back. cost $$, but avoid the border hassles, if they are even possible.

The wife and I were stopped going into Canada from WA state several years ago. I had a handgun magazine laying in the trunk and they asked if I had any weapons in the car. They pulled us aside and did a 15 minute search that yeilded nothing. They then asked again if I had a handgun and I responded, no. They said if they found one at this point, we were going to jail. After 20 more minutes of searching, and breaking the grove compartment hinge, we finally went on our way with no apologies. I felt like lodging a formal complaint, but I found out later that this was normal at the border.

Rusty, You can legally ship a handgun to yourself w/o an FFL. What you can do is ship your handgun to your AK address from yourself to yourself. I have done this when I moved to AK. Before my flight, I would go to UPS and overnight the package to my AK address. If you do not have an address in AK, I would call UPS or FedEx and ask if they could hold the package for you til you arrive to pick up at their office. BTW, you can use postal service to also mail long arms only from yourself to yourself.

Suggest that you contact the Royal Canadian Mountied Police. They can give you all the details about how to take a hand gun through Canada legally. Don't know if you still can however at one time you could register it at the border BUT the container it was in got sealed at that point and better not have the seal broken until after you left Canada.
