Gun storage question

I was wondering how you guys store your firearms in your house? I am looking into buying a safe but have very little knowledge on them. Any advice as to size, manufacturer, what to look for in quality, and where to purchase would be greatly appreciated.

As fo number of firearms of I plan on storing, probably between 25-30 total.

I have 2 safes, one 30 gun browning, and after listening to Glenn Beck I purchased a 50 gun Liberty safe, I got one @ Cabelas the other @ a gun shop... I would highly recommend getting a dehumidifier for your safe, I have two in each safe, one a silica gel box that will cover more than enough square feet for the inside of my safes, and a dehumidifier rod in each safe as well... if you have alot of AR's and large optics on your weapons, pay no attention to the # of guns the safe is supposed to hold.

Thanks Skinney. I have heard that a good rule of thumb is a safe will tipically only hold half of the number of guns that they say they will. I have also been looking at Liberty Safes. The one that I'm interested in has a 2 hr. fire rating at 1200 degrees and holds 39 guns.Made out of 10 gauge steel. Price is $2300 shipped.

dang, that seems like alot, I got my 48 or 49 gun safe in cabelas for like 1200.00, and I'm thinking it has the same fire rating... shipping sucks, so I loaded it in the back of my truck and hauled it 2.5hrs.

Thanks skinney. I'll check out Cabelas. The one I was looking at was the LEO model. Whatever that is. Retail was like $5200 I believe.

I'd decide what size safe you want and then choose the fire rating/upgrades that will fit your budget.

If it came down to owning a nice 1 hour rated safe or not owning a safe at all because you could not afford the fancy 2 hour safe, I'd go with the nice 1 hour safe.

Fire ratings can cost or save you money when it comes to safes. If you live in the "city" with a fire dept that has good response times,a higher longer fire rating may be a waste of hard earned cash.If you live in the "country" and have a vol fire dept a higher/longer rating might be money well spent.

I live in the sticks where we have only a volunteer FD. Quick response is unlikely, so I went with a Homeland Safe made with ceramic insulation (compared to most safe's drywall/gypsum) that provides nearly two hours of protection against a 2300 degree fire. No other maker that I'm aware of comes close to that. I got a decent sized model with all the bells and whistle (lining, dehumidifier, lights, pistol hangers, etc.) for about $1500 several years ago. I'd definitely recommend Homeland Safes if you're in the market.

I have just recently scratched two of my rifles getting them out of the safe. If I want something in the back I end up having to remove several guns to reach them. Just after I bought my 50 gun safe (which is crowded with less than half that) I found this.....

Thanks DesertRam and Tnslim, never heard of those brands before. will definitely be looking into those.

BTW I too live outside of the city. Only have a volounteer FD and no fire hydrants in our development. Fire rating is pretty high on the list.
