H.S. Hammerin Crow Call - Tips?

Just got my H.S. Hammerin Crow Call yesterday and after studying crowbusters.com and reading the back of the pamplet that came with the call, I have found out that the two main calls are made of smooth and rough notes, as in 'fuu'=smooth and 'all'=raspy. I did a quick search and saw some tips for how to call correctly and saw something about how to let your tongue hit the roof of your mouth when you say the word all.

I have been practicing in my backyard in a residental area and the crows would come to my shed/garage but then again, wild crows are completely different and I am curious if there is any advice to hand calling effectivly? Obviously I know to study the birds call and/or purchase a learning DVD preferably from crowbusters.com which I plan on doing sometime later this week. But I am curious if there are any tips. Should I be holding the call a certain way, maybe cupping near the mouth piece or muffle the end of the call or amplify it?

Hi Gundy-- Crowbusters is a great place to read & learn. Those crows you called into your backyard ARE wild crows. They are the same as the ones outside the city limits. I know this to be true from crow hunting the past 6-7 years. If they are responding there they will in the field also. Now in the field you gotta be where the food is or along the routes they fly to & from the food. In town there is food everywhere. Pick up the Bob Aronsohn CD on hand calling & practice. Money very well spent. I refer to mine every year just before we get started back up again. You are already experiencing hand call success on those black bandits & now it's time to join CrowBusters & achieve your lofty goals. Those guys are as good about sharing info as the predator hunters here are. Best of Luck!!

Yeah makes sense I guess. Just wasn't sure if they acted different, as in the residental squirrels will practically take food from your hands yet the ones out near the lake in the wild will bolt at the sound of someone walking through the forest.

I will check out those resources though, hopefully I can join crowbusters this week on payday.
