H-S Precision Pro-Series Sporter Stock Question

I got one of these stocks on my 30-06 that I want to change the barrel on. What is the max diameter barrel that this model stock will handle? I was thinking of sanding out the barrel channel to allow for a bigger diameter barrel but did know if that would work? Can anyone help?

thanks

Mike

Sand away mikeinlouisiana sand away! I use heavy grit paper and a piece of electrical conduit. Depending on barrel size, it shouldn't be a problem. I opened up a factory contoured Rem. BDL stock to fit a 5A contour Douglas with no problem. Just be reasonable. A full one inch bench barrel might be pushing it! All you need is enough to float.

Slow down, opening up a after market synthetic is much different then opening up a factory wood or injected molded stock!
If you have the same HS sporter stock I have I would say that A std magnum contour or #4 custom would be the max. These stock have a thin outer layer and then fill so there isn't a bunch of material there to sand out. I have a #3 Broughton in mine and it is a good fit. I would cal HS and see what they say. Good luck Eric

Yep, and ask them what's the biggest barrel it'll take as is.
The one I had held a Remington Magnum contour barrel with plenty of clearance.

I actually did call HS a few years ago and asked the same question.
Their answer was to sand away.
The tech I talked to said I could take up to an eighth of an inch all the way around without hurting anything, but since it's fiberglass, to stop if you start getting into the fabric.
He also warned me to not be to aggressive, because the material wasn't near as hard as Walnut.
He was right.
Luck

I have owned a couple of these stocks. Personally, I'd go RVC or smaller. Maybe even a standard #5 or smaller, just because of balance issues.

A Pac-Nor #4 is about perfect IMO, and would be great with a 30-06 also....

If you go with a Douglas barrel, a #5 is .700 at the muzzel. A 5A is called a sporter contour and is .750 at the muzzel. I used a 5A in a factory BDL stock with a bit of sanding to the channel. Most barrel makers have a contour chart so you can kinda pick what suits your needs. Worse case, is sell or trade your stock. The H-S stocks are not hard to get rid of. Probably be able to swap for what you need/want.

+1 on the Pacnor size I just built a rifle with a Pacnor #5 contour with this same stock and there ain't much left but it did work.

Yep. Pac-Nors run big compared to "standard" or Douglas contours. A PN #4 will fit that thing like it grew there..........
