Hand call???

I am getting into coyote hunting and I already have the primos raspy coaxer. I am looking at the primos lil dog call. What would be a good hand call to have?

Do yourself a favor and buy calls from custom call makers right here on the forum. Better quality, better sound, easier to blow.

I agree wholeheartedly with possumal. Carver calls are some of the best and I won't confuse you with other makers just yet. You may well find that buying custom calls becomes addictive. The custom calls here are not made for mass production, they are made for appearance, sound and ease of use. In short, pride of ownership. All at a price that is shockingly reasonable

Best of luck choosing your calls!

A good closed reed from one of the custom call makers would be a great place to start. They're easy to blow for first-timers and can be had at pretty fair prices for a young hunter just starting out. Bearmanric calls would be a good place to start. He has both hand made and production lines that are sure to provide you with what you need at a fair price. Couldn't buy from a nicer guy either.

+1 Strictly Business set is what i started with and my Rabid Rabbit (by Carver) has called in both of my coyotes.
Orions are easy to blow also.

Each of the calls in that set has a purpose. One is a coaxer, and each is designed to allow you to make different sounding distress sounds. The open reeds can be used for pup howls as well as distress. Most beginners can blow the closed reed calls and get a respectful distress cry. As you develop more skill, you will use the open reed calls more.

you just need to remember that all calls, no matter electronic or hand calls are tools of the trade. I, for one can't have enough hand calls. they all will have a place and time. getting a few calls and learning to properly manipulate them will change the game for you.

My first hand call was the Primos Catnip and I still use it. I like how I can vary the sound by how hard I bite. It's really easy to blow and use. Highly recommend.

Kerry and his "Strictly Business" set is an awesome deal and the set he uses himself. Just talk to him. Super nice guy.

If you get some calls from him grab his dvd too. It's pretty good!

If you are going to spend the money get a set of kerry's. They will cover everything that you need to do. For the money they are better than the production calls that you can buy at your local sporting good store. Then after a while you will start picking calls up from other custom call builders. They are super easy to make sound great. I went through the buying all of the primos and various other mass produced calls. And only after making adjustments to them I was able to get them to sound ok 95% of the time. But with the custom call builders there calls are usually 99-100% better sounding.

I've been using my Sceery for 15+ years. Very good call.

It does have a tendency to freeze up more than some other calls, but a few minutes inside my jacket and all is good again, for awhile.

I do want to get a custom for my next call though.

If you want an off the shelf open reed call, try a Tally-ho.
Easy to blow, you can howl or make distress sounds with it. plus it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

The Verminators calls are great also.

The howlers that Primos makes fro me are hard to use as they take a lot of air at least it does for me. That is not to say they are bad calls.

Custom calls are OK to real great But some are not worth the money as they are more of a work of art on the outside than what really counts. So you wind up paying for looks not how they work.

This all is just my own opinion.
