Handgunning Hogs

Had some time to kill today before going to hunt a new property...met a guy a couple days ago and he gave me the green light to hunt yotes.

Been wanting to knock the dust off the TC .30-30 Winchester so I set up near an area where I expected to see hogs. When I arrived the hogs were already out in the field so I had to cat and mouse from oak tree to oak tree where I finally got a 40 yard shot on this sow... she went about 10 yards...

Got set up in my truck and figured I'd try the mount with the TC...

That thing feels like it's in a ransom rest... very solid and stable. A short while later this boar came out at about 40 yards and he dropped in his tracks...

Packed up and went to hunt coyote. I just happened to be on the rifle scanning when this female came running past my truck at about 20 yards and into the field. My caller was not activated so I don't know why she came in hot... but when she slowed to a trot I put a 123gr Hornady SST into her... she spun, I hit her again... and down she went. Glad I was paying attention.

I saw two others crossing the field at about 250-300 yards, they stopped and looked my way when I hit the caller but they simply were not interested and moved on. Heard a lot of coyote in the distance, this new place should be good.

Now that’s a good day. Taking the two hogs with the TC was exciting I’m sure. I used to do a lot of groundhog hunting with a Contender using .223 and .30 Herrett barrels. Those pistols were very accurate. I never should have traded them.

Excellent work.
Several months ago I took a javelina with a revolver, and feral hog with my XP.
Always good when you are hunting with a handgun.

Most definitely a great job!!

3 critters down, millions more to go;-)

I know Arizona has a HAM season on Javelina but I chose to chase them with my bow!
Not the best shot with a handgun.

Bowhuntr6pt. Way to go good shooting.
I have an opportunity to shoot hogs just about every month, and hand guns are primary means.
TCs can be very fun. I have a 30-30 and a 22 hornet.
Main critter getter is my 454 with a Ultra-Dot .
But I am not above using whatever is handy, be it a 44 or 45
Keep it up.

Tree weeks ago,, I shot 1 sow with my 44mag using the 240gr Fusion offered by Federal. Yes sometimes I do purchase ammo when limited for time, or if I want to try a specific bullet. I was able to stalk within 25 yds or so, since I was downwind, and it was real dark. No moon that night. My 44 has a 4-3/4 barrel and the green light attached to my Ultra-Dot made the sounder a little nervous. So,,,, a quick shoulder shot was my choice. The 3MOA dot is too big and sort of blinds you.
The fusion dropped the sow right there, but upon dissecting, it proved to be less expansion than hoped for. I am waiting for the new 240gr. From Swift.
Wednesday another trip to ranch is planned.
Test hopefully will include,, NEW 327 bullet from Swift. This will be downloaded to the 32H&R w/5-1/2 barrel. Hogs are nocturnal right now, and the shot will be with iron sights. A lighted feeder is going to be the only chance. Hopefully this will allow me to make a neck shot.

This weekend was a messed up deal mostly because of the much needed rain. I did not get to test ammo or bullets. Looking through the Gen 2 was much better than the old Ultra-Dot, I had on my 44. Will try again in 3 weeks.

Got 4.5 inches of rain, and obviously pigs did not need to come to water and did not come to corn much. 4 finally showed up at 11pm and I had to take the sow with my 6.8. I propped the pig up and took 2 shots with the “new” Swift 327 bullet. First shot did one heck of a number on the backbone. The second shot went through both shoulders and fortunately stopped just beneath the offside hide. I was very pleased since this allowed me to examine the bullet. Also allowing me to photograph the damage.
The bullet mushroomed only partial, since the velocity was an anemic 950fps. Now I think the 32H&R can be pushed a little faster. Swift is working on Data for me. Good news is that even with partial expansion, the damage was impressive. Entrance was small but quickly opened up. The bullet material is tough, and will do its job.
In conclusion, I digress to what I had felt was possibly the result would be. The velocity needs to be up to the 327, like it was designed to be. But once a good load is established, staying in a range such as 30 to 35yds,,, if you can place your shot in vitals, on 150lb and under you can take home the bacon.
Deer would be easily taken also.
Now, on the subject of the new Gen 2 Ultra-Dot. The dot was small enough I could see past it. I was not blind to the black pigs. Now there was 2 blondes that were difficult to see. Here again I used the 240gr Fusion. If I can get a chance at 250-300 lb hogs then I would not mind my 454 w/300gr Swifts. I haven’t used heavy for caliber in the 44mag in a few years. That could be a consideration. It’s best to use enough gun. It’s a good idea to be prepared WITH enough gun. Note: pigs were still nocturnal. Red dots are great in daylight. Some guys don’t have any problems with them at night. A friend has to use a scope.
Tests are just that,,,,, tests. Nothing is conclusive here, since so few animals were subject.
Edit to add yes this supposed to be handgunning hogs, and I had to use my 6.8since pig was 125yds away. I had nothing handy in a handgun that would do the job.
