Handheld thermal as thermal scope

FLIR RS64 is $6500 but a Scout III with the same core/spec is $3500. That's a big price jump for the addition of just the reticle.

I've read of some guys using the scout with a 1/4-20" to rail mount which sounds like a good idea: http://www.scoutbasecamp.com/content/how-to-use-a-flir-scout-hunting.html

Problem seems to be getting the reticle on there. What have people been using? I was thinking of just a 2MOA red dot onto the screen but seems people add some magnification on there. Maybe a fixed 3x scope?

Scout III as a weapon mount is not very optimal. However you rig up a reticle I wouldn't trust it to shoot repeatable groups. You'd be much happier buying a used weapon mounted unit (they are around) or going to a 320 core scope. Both can be had in that price range.

I wouldn't be afraid of used. Flir has excellent warranty. IRD was bought by Trijicon, so their resources will be added to the mix. Used thermal is usually a good buy.

I would skip the scout line all together to be honest with you. Tiny little dim LCD displays defeat the purpose of the 640 core. Also they have no contrast/gain control or manual focus. I've had both the scout III 640 and the LS-XR and wasn't very impressed.

I've bought most of my thermals used. You can get way more for your money. For the price of the scout III 640 you could find something that would suit you much better in a QD rifle scope setup.

I've got a couple units I could part with, shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Weapon sights are built and tested for recoil.
