i have seen several where i hunt and want to put them down if they give me the oppurtunity, but wasn't sure what to do with a dog that is hariless.

is it ok to leave it? will it spred to other yotes if i do leave it?
should i handle a coyote that doesn't appear to have mange but is running with a mangy dog? (they are probaly breeding)

thanks for your help!

Last fall a friend of mine and I were walking to a stand, and we spooked a coyote out of the river bottom. I thought it was gone, but it stopped about 300 yards away and my friend dropped it with his 243. He went to recover his fine prize and I stayed behind and waited for him. He came back with the coyote over his shoulder and a puzzled look on his face. He throws the coyote down at my feet and I about vomitted. This poor mangey dog was in very bad shape. Unfortunately, I hadn't ever seen a real case of mange, but had an idea thats what it was. I did some research that night, and sure enough, that dog had it bad. I wish I'd have known earlier as my friend lugged that thing all over the country on his shoulder. He was covered in blood on his back, and he always pulled it out of the back of the pickup when we showed someone. I think he handled that thing more than I handle my pet dog. Anyways, he luckily made it out of the experience, I still don't know how, without getting mange and scratching all his hair out. But he got lucky, and I wouldn't recomend handling those nasty ones. It also seems as there are a lot more mangey ones around this year too...

Very rare do humans get mange. If you do it is a slight itchy rash. Goes away in 48 hours. Even domestic dogs have a hard time contracting it, cause of all the flea and tick chemicals and even wormer.

The mange thing gets blown out of the water pretty bad, if it was that contaigous, we would all have it.

It is still a good idea to wear latex gloves and or wash after handling.

Scarpotic mange is very bad ... this is for everyone DO NOT TOUCH !!!!! If you MUST for whatever reason be sure to wear rubber gloves and wash your clothes at a laundry mat afterwards instead of your own wash machine.

This stuff can be spread to humans and domestic animals , there is pill for it if it is contracted but save your self the headache and let the thing lay why would you want to handle it anyhow, unless its in a farmers backyard where his dogs or other animals can get to it .. let the birds clean it up!!

I guess at that point i would dig a hole right next to it and push it in with the shovel and bury it good.

Dont handle mangy coyotes!!!
