Hearing Protection and Amplifier

Anyone know about the "SSI Hearing Protection and Enhancement" product?
web site: www.ssi-online.com
Got some hearing loss from shooting not so much at the range but in the field w/o protection. Walmart and Sports. W both have an ear plug, battery powered that is supposed to help. Does this stuff work? Is it junk? Would I be better off with the $80 muffs vs these ear plugs for $ 30.00 Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with those products, but both I and my son wear the Peltor Tactical 6 amplified muffs. They are wonderful at the range and for PD shoots. You can hear excellent. Haven't hunted with them yet, though.

Bayou City Boy HAS hunted with his (I think). You might look up his user name and send him a PM. I'm sure he wouldn't mind sharing his experience with you.

Thanks for the reply and name. I tried the Peltor and they seem compact and wearable with a full cap on. And cheaper than hearing aids which is where I am going down the road if I don't do something!!!

You're right about hearing aids down the road. My hearing is permanently damaged from years of duck hunting. And it WON'T come back, either. (I hear crickets constantly /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) Just a thought...Peltor offers the T6 in a "behind the head" model also that might be attractive to you. MidwayUSA often has the best price on these units, and Cabela's is usually competitive also.

I purchased a pair of Peltor Tactical Sport muffs, as a
birthday present for my brother. He had a set of something
else, like Walker Power Muffs, I think, and sold them.
Too much wind noise, was the issue, as I recall. Anyway,
I didn't know that at the time I purchased this set as a
present. So when he opened the gift he seemed a little
less than enthused, and then after he told me the story of
his previous pair, I understood why! Anyway, I told him
these where suppose to be better for wind noise, and still
amplify soft sounds, somewhat, and still protect hearing.
He is very happy with this set, and as of yet, hasn't
sold them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif He would if he didn't like them.
I liked them so much, that I will be ordering a pair soon

I stayed away from the Peltor 6 and 7 models because of
reviews that called out to much wind noise. There is some
info on the Peltor site about the differences in the digital
"tactical" series versus the older Model 6 and 7 technology.
The Tactical Sport series seems to have taken advantage
of the newer digital technology, so one gets a cleaner
amplification, at a competitive price.

We wore ours in SD in August, in quite a lot of wind every day. We didn't have any wind noise problems. Ours are the T6 models.

Hidalgo,

I was just repeating what some reviews said about the
Tac 6's. Being an electrical engineer whom designs
ASICs, it didn't take too much to convince me to give the
"digital" Peltors a try. And this model lived up to
my expectations. I did not mean to imply that the
Tac 6's were not good units. Much effort is put into
suppressing wind noise across a microphone. Digital
signal processing has been the most succesful at that
suppression, to date. So when I read that the TacSport
Series had an ASIC digital signal processor, that made
my decision easy. And in a side by side comparison of
wind noise suppression, of the Tac 6 versus the TacSport,
my money is riding on the ASIC digital signal processor

I have just begun to use the Peltor Tac 6. I find it is quite good for my purposes. I too was worried about the wind, but being out in the wind was really a good experience. It kept my ears warm and shut off the sound when the wind blew hard, just as it would with a rifle shot. No wind noise. no rifle shot noise and plenty of sound comes through. I can hear my caller well.
