I joined up so I could learn from some of the best. I think Jimmie from Kentucky posts here, and he has helped me with many questions on our state board. I'll include a few pictures of me with a nice predator. Thanks!

For size comparison, I'm 6'5", and I can easily palm a basketball.

Very nice mount. Was that left at your house by Santa? If you read the posts on this forum, you will learn how to go get one for yourself! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It's a coyote. Taxidermist here are not all that used to mounting them and sometimes miss the finer points. And yes gentlemen, they do get that big. I have taken two silverbacks that match that puppy for size at 55 and 56 pounds. Rare critters now but I still find sign of one or two now and again. There's one in zone 1 of the lbl that will match this one for size easy.

As for the color phase, I have taken a white and a few reds. Still looking for the black that is supposed to be there as well as another white one. For some reason color phases tend to pop up in some areas more than others. I would like to get some DNA testing done on these to find out why if possible.Jimmie

Hammer65. Welcome to Predator Masters! Jimmy. Area 1 you say? Hummmmmm.... Where did I put those maps????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif kyray

Now Kyray, why would I want to give out more than that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Big area with lots of hollers and hilltops covered with sign in there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Then there was the really nice silverback over at Higgins cemetary. Now if I could just remember which Higgins cemetary /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Coming out last week after chasing the cats in Wranglers hollow, I saw a young one crossing the road at Egner ferry campground. Much closer to the bridge and he would have run off into the lake /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Jimmie

in reply to the comments, this is definitely a wolf, and he was 100% wild. It was killed in the late 90s by one of my good friends in southeastern Saskatchewan, and they think this was the alpha male/leader of the pack. I thought the snow mount base might give it away.

Wolves are not that common in this area of SK. They had seen this pack led by the big black several times that winter. The conditions were harsh that year with a deep, heavy snow. They would see the pack or signs of it or hear neighbors talk about seeing them every other week or so, and figured the wolves were making a large circuit looking for food. The pack settled in their area more regularly and started feeding on a big winter-kill cow. There were 4 or 5 in the pack, and of course, this big black wolf stuck out like a sore thumb in the snow. They watched the pack from a long distance a couple of days, and this black wolf would eat his fill, then the others in the group would dig in. They set up in gun range for the pack one day and waited on them to show and popped this guy when he came up to the carcass to eat again. I'm not sure how much he weighed.

Now that would explain someone mounting a cone headed bushy tailed critter with a curl in it's tail instead of mounting it straight as it should be. You never told that story Hammer. But then I don't always go back and read all the later post's either. You would not believe the number of coyote mounts done this way around here.

I have had two bowhunters describe just such a critter in the LBL. One got a look at twenty yards and swears there is no lighter coloring on it's sides, solid black with the white star in the chest. I have yet to see or find this group. Everytime I think I am looking in the right spot I find a horse trail not on the map.Jimmie
