Coyote Hunter with a Twist—Airgun Style 🐺💨

Hey folks, I'm a coyote hunter with a bit of a twist—I run a PCP air rifle. Anyone else here working coyotes with air power?

My current setup:

  • Rifle: .308 Texan (modified for performance)
  • Ammo: 150gr pure lead slug from BARS
  • Optics: Zulus HD 5–20x with built-in rangefinder
  • Style: Night hunts, mostly
Next outing, I’ll be running a tree stand setup over bait—testing how well I can stay concealed while keeping shot angles clean. Always tweaking gear placement and scent control to stay one step ahead of these smart dogs.

If this kind of rig is new to you or you’re curious about airgun hunting, feel free to ask—I’m happy to share what’s worked (and what hasn’t). I’m also here to learn more about baiting strategies, seasonal patterns, and anything that helps sharpen the craft.

Welcome aboard, sounds like an effective rig. Long way from my Benjerman pump up pellet rifle. Hope to here about some of your hunts.
 
Welcome to PM from a fellow NY predator hunter. I’m with AWS on your rig vs what I grew up with and even the springer I have currently. Airguns aren’t just for kids anymore. They’re also not just for rats and starlings either!

Hope to hear about your hunts. Great group of folks here, so I’m sure you’ll get some useful information.

Hartford a bout 15 miles from the VT boarder, here are some number, I was testing a new valve, for accuracy I dialed it in at 990 fps with 150gr slug, I think I'm going to learn from this group, how to give coyote sleeping pills🤣

@ Hunter 308… just wondering if you’re the guy that has been mentioned on the One Predator Podcast? Carl I think, mentioned meeting an air gunner on one episode.

For anyone interested, it’s a NY group of guys that do a podcast that I find more hilarious than serious. They have the passion for sure. Just down to earth guys that hunt. No chest thumping or my way or the highway stuff. Check em out. I seriously thought they were a joke at first but now I can’t wait to hear what they are going to yap about next! It’s off season so they’re jonesing like me! Lol.

Fellow NY PCP/Powder burner Varmint hunter here.
I have a .9mm Recluse with a NC lead dust collector that's great for bigger critters out to 75 yards with a 115 Grn Mr Hollow point slug if it perfectly.
I use an 81 Gr pellet for the smaller critters.
Triggers not the best, but it will get the job done and is backyard quiet.
Haven't used it a lot, but it's in the stall waiting and I have the Rix L3 backup scope sighted in.
Your rig looks great and should do a nice job.

Not a airgunner, just have a need to smell cordite and gunpowder.

That said there is some very serious "air guns" on the market. One of the best thing is from my understanding is a air gun suppressor isn't in the NFA. Which is a plus. Glad to see that is the way it should be unregulated.
The performance level of these "air rifles" today are astonishing to me. I know very little about them and do find them interesting. Look forward to hearing of your collective pursuits Thanks for posting.

Why I Hunt with a PCP in Washington County, NY​

I run a .308 Texan with a Yokozuna moderator, and here’s why:
  • It sharpens my woodsmanship—every setup, stalk, and shot has to be dialed
  • Ammo’s cheaper, so I can train more and test setups without breaking the bank
  • It’s quieter than a powder burner, which matters around here
In Washington County, 170 yards is a long shot. Most of my kills are inside 100. And since NY doesn’t allow moderators on firearms, but does on airguns, the Texan gives me reach and stealth.
Around here, the last thing you want to hear at 3 a.m. is a rifle crack. The airgun lets me hunt responsibly, stay sharp, and keep the peace.
