Is there a way to mount the Pulsar Helion or the other Pulsar monoculars. As a total newb I feel like it would really simplify things to have the monocular held in position by the helmet? Then again the helmet might just add to the clunky ness?
I don't know of anyone having mounted a Helion unit for head use. My Pulsar HD19A is rigged to head mount. I'm using it on a Crye Precision nightcap which works quite well when coupled with the aluminum mount that P-mack (who posts here regularly) has developed. Arms get tired pretty quickly holding a thermal and hands get very cold as well.
I had a HELION XP28 for about a week and built a helmet mount for it. Couldn't imagine going back to handheld after having a scanner helmet mounted. I've built helmet mounts for the HD19A and that XP. It's not too difficult to do. There are several threads on here that could give you some ideas. I know PMack had a few pics of his mounts for the HD19A'S.
Consider using a selfie stick. I know it sounds silly, but it’s probably the best $10-$15 you’ll ever spend saving your arm and shoulder fatigue scanning all night if a helmet option doesn’t work out.
I made this in about an hour just to try it out. I had plans to remove all of the unnecessary material later. I returned my XP scanner and never needed this mount afterwards.
Thanks. All great input. Seems like one of those things that a guy just needs to try it all the different ways and see what fits his style the best. Glad to see it's doable. I figured there had to be a way.
I think that your concern about it being "clunky" if helmet mounted is right on the money.
The Helion weighs about 1 lb. and is almost 9" long. It might work for you but I think that it might get pretty tiring.
I have owned and used a Helion.
My suggestion is to use it hand held, not on a helmet.
I haven't helmet mounted a Helion but jk2 and 1trkyhntr might be right with the clunky term. I have the 19a helmet mounted and works fine I really like it. The quantam models are shorter, and less than half the weight of the Helion. I still use a battery pack on the pack for counter weight. The 2 mounting holes while not quite centered or aligned still allow easy up/down r/l adjustment with the knurled knobs on the mount I made.
The longer body and single mounting hole on the Helion models are going to push the weight and center of gravity farther away from your head, requiring more counterweight.
