Help a cripple with a deer blind....

As some may know Im recovering from knee surgery in recent few weeks.

Anyways it dawned on me I wont be able to get in and out of my gun tower in a few weeks as easily and SAFELY as I would like.

So I thought I would build a nice ground blind on my snowmobile trailer. Will be easy to move if we so choose, and wont require much climbing and strain placed on the knee.

A couple requirements - may sound odd to some, but hey thats the way it is.....

1. Has to be large enough for two, my wife has recently taken up hunting.

2. Needs to have a roof

My current one is a little too deep at 6x6 when its just me alone in there its a bit cumbersome to see from when its elevated as I have to sit in the middle of it. I was thinking 4x8 for ease of building materials. I looked all over the net looking on Ebay etc for some plans to build one. Remember Im hobbled up so the least amount of trips to the lumber store the better. I guess what Im stuck at most is height of sidewalls/windows etc. I thought for sure I could find something on the net. Im not looking for someone who bought one to give me all the info, I would buy, or make donation to make up for it. Im not worried about that. Its just short on time, and with my gimp leg need something with little or no extreme planning. I have drawn a few out, but teh window height gots me messed up. I keep changing it.

Unfortunatley my other stand is up, and is a few hours away so getting there and getting measurements would be time and cost ineffective.

If anyone knows of a place on the web thta has such stands or anyone has any info a hobbled up hunter would be very thankfull.

P.S if it was just me any one of my turkey blinds would work. But certain sacrifices I make to keep the wife (slightly) interested in hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The window height should be quite easy to do, since you're building it on a snowmobile trailer. I usually build my blinds in the garage, disassemble them and re-assemble them in the woods. This way, everything is in its correct place and height when it's setup in my hunting spot. Take the chair that you'll be using in the blind and sit down on it.

Use a stick in place of a rifle and then measure the height from the floor where the rifle (stick) is the most comfortable for you. This should be the bottom of your window and you'll be able to use it as a rest too. I usually build my walls 6' high. This is usually more than high enough for most people, since you'll be sitting anyway. I build my walls 4' wide as it's a one man setup. Obviously, you'll want to go a bit bigger, since you'll have two people in your blind.

So my blind is 4 feet square and 6 feet high. I use one sheet of plywood for the floor/roof, 1/2 sheet for each. You can use 2x4s, or 2x2s, for the walls. I use drywall screws to hold everything together, since they are quick and easy to use. I put building paper on the roof, followed by flashing. The roof is then waterproof and easy to build.
Hopefully, this gives you some ideas for your blind. I've built mine this way for years and have had no problems with this type of blind. MI VHNTR

You might do what I did... But a pop-up blind. They're fairly cheap, and cost around the same as wooden blind that will last ALOT LONGER! I've just always hated spending around $150 building a blind only to have it last 2 or 3 years...

I'll PM you a link to a company that I am extremely satisfied with their product. My hub-style pop-up blind cost me $160 and I love the versitality of it by just being able to move it at a whem.

I have several pop up turkey blinds. If it was just me they would be fine.

My wife is new to hunting, and to keep her interested. It needs to be warm /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know thats not hunting to some, but she has shot several deer the last few years and when I met her she was a vegeterian. So she is coming around.

I been busting my hump all day today. Got all the materials and just winging it as I go along. I got the floor, and the two short sides done. Im going to build it in sections, trailer it up there and bolt it together while cauking it etc.

I got about 130 in materials so far, and I need about 40 more to wrap it up. The local lumber yard has the oddest OSB board you will ever find. Its put together with a different type of glue, and on one side it has a latex coating. Its 100% water proof. I built my tower stand a few years ago with it, and you can go inside to this day and the wood looks and smells like new. Its about 2 bucks per sheet more but well worth it if you ask me. No having to shingle, roll roof, tar paper the thing.

Anyways I started on it about 4 hours ago and Im completely beat. My knee feels alright but its not 100% so trying to lug around sheets and such with one good leg, and being out of commission for a while has wore me out. Im going to sleep good tonight. Wife just got home and she is leaving for a work seminar, so going to see her for a few minutes and hope to get the framework for one more side down yet tonight.

Heck I may go all the way over the top and insluate this thing. I have a bunch left over as well as carpet. I alwasy put carpet in to keep the sound down, or its like a big ol drum.

Oh well long post about nothing, just excited to be outta the house.
