Hey all

New to the site and pred hunting.
I'm in Alaska and looking to buy a rifle to dedicate to fox and lynx. what do you guys think? I want to be fur friendly.
Currently i have a 17hmr, 25-06, 270 wby, and 30-06 but dont do any reloading.

thanks

CZ,

Probably, the 17 Remington in my limited experience with it, only had it a couple months. The few coyotes I've shot with it, I have not found entry hole till hours later after they had laid in the truck. NO sewing was needed on any of them. Others say you need to reload to get good groups with it, I can't say one way or the other as I have never shot any factory rounds through mine as I reload. I have read where others have shot factory rounds and got one inch or better. Another option might be the 204 Ruger, most everything I have read seems to point to it being more fur friendly than the 22's. Good luck.

For fear of beating a dead horse.....There's not a best caliber for what you describe. Range, cost, reloader or not, and accuracy all come into account. Cheapest wise .223, Range 22/250, .223( heavy pills), Accuracy 22BR and 20 Vartarg. Now the 22BR, 20 Vartarg are not going to be feasible if ya don't reload. The 22/250 is a good "all-round" choice. The 22/250 is a flat shooter, has nice velocity and it isn't too hard on barrels. The only draw back to the 22/250 is it is kinda pricey to shoot if ya don't reload. Also don't forget about the "duece", 17 Rem, Tac 20, 220 Swift, .204 and the other little bores.

shoot any of them just use fmj like the matchking..but your shot better be true cause there is little to no mushrooming and some i have shot with my .308 168gr lake city matchking took it thru the heart and still ran a little way so go for the head!!but the barnes .224 40gr varmin-A-tor bullet has great accuracy and extremly explosive and alot of the times it never exits and doesn't need to the interior damage is brutal.so buy a 22-250.. the .204 is nice but cann't handle alot of rounds between barrel cleaning or the accuracy is affected same goes for the .17 rem. but rember to each his own..

I would say .17 Rem but you don't reload. Stay away from any FMJ's. Besides the rick effect, they are not for game period! Again comes up the Match Kings. All I can say that in my experience you sure don't want these bullets. The ones I shoot will destroy whatever they hit. 168's in a .30 cal as well.

There is not magic bullet or caliber, except for the .17 Rem in my opinion. They will all tear up hides it hit wrong. I would just pick up a .223 and use 55gr SP bullets.

CZ in 221 fireball !

I've seen the 17rem mentioned many times as fur friendly on coyotes, also seen more than one red/grey fox disragged w/a 17rem.I also saw a surface splash, where the entry looked like the exit side.
A coyote is three times the size of a fox.

I think you could shoot a hornet and do well especially with either a game type bullet or maybe 35-40gr v-max.
The 221 is deadly accurate and versatile, shoot maybe a barnes xlc-all cooper bullet at around 27-2800fps and it would almost certainly be nice.Good luck Mike

Thanks guys,

Well I must admit I was hopping to hear that my 17hmr would be plenty of gun for fox and lynx. even though most of you disagree on cal. choice it seems the 17 won't hack it?

The 17 HMR will work but isn't the best choice. The 22 mag gives you a little more room for errow. If the 17HMR is all the rifle you have, then go for it, but use the 20 gr XTP HP it is a little tougher and holds together much better than the 17 gr V-Max and wait for a broadside shot under 50 yards.

Weve been using the 17 hmr out on kodiak for foxes. SO far it has been awesome. Farthest shot to date was probably a 100 yards. Good clean kills, no damage. Other than that I think the 222 is a good choice. The hornet would be another good choice, but your limited to about two kinds of factory ammo with that. Of course there are only about 4 kinds of ammo for the 222. Guess you better take up reloading too LOL with foxes I think you want to keep bullet velocity down. Lots of bullets these days you buy over the counter for fast 22 cal rifles are highly fragmentable and seem to cause alot of damage on pelts.

Here is a good piece of advice. Buy something cheap, reliable and go out and call some critters. I wouldnt stress too much about alot of bullet or rifle choices. Concentrate on calls and getting something to come in.

If I were you Id keep using that 17, and spend the money on a foxpro with remote. When I got my foxpro, my success practiclly doubled. Not alot of people have one, and the sounds are pretty unique and the preds seem to respond to it very well. Make sure you have a woodpecker in distress, that sound is MONEY!

Alaska (the road accessable part), for the most part, I think, sucks for calling. We dont have near the population of predators that the lower 48 does, and the ones that we do have are pretty timid and call shy. Couple that with limited access, and lots of calling going on with what access there is and you come out empty handed 99.1% of the time.

Ive pretty much given up calling around the mat valley, kenai areas. Im still interested, I just go somewhere where they are, even if I have to buy a ticket.
