A big G'day to all on here!

This is my first post on this site and I like what I see, Top site /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Well where do I begin? At the start I think.

I'm an bowhunter here in Oz that hunts with Traditional gear( Recurves and Longbows) and have found a spot thats jam packed with Dingos and wild dogs. Ive howled in one dingo with useing my hands only and this fella I took with my recurve. I'm wanting to hunt more of them and I'm looking at trying out a type of coyote howler to bring them in and than trying a fawn belt or a rabbit distress call as these animals are in this area.
Could any one help me out in pointing me in the right area as to whats a good howler and distress calls? Being a bowhunter we have to get up close and personal to our targets for good clean shots.

I've listened to Wolf howls on the net and this sounds like a dingo. Does a coyote sound roughly the same? I'm thinking of useing a tape of a wolf or coyote to bring them in and I'll be on a flank to try and bust one or two. Well thats the plan anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry for the long post, looking forward to some replys.

First of all, welcome to the board!

If you want a good howler, get one that is an open reed type. These will give you more variety in your sounds. I dont have one of his calls, but from what ive read, Rich Cronk is the man for a howler. I suggest contacting him for a quality custom howler. However, you DO NOT have to have custom calls. Quality factory howlers are the Hunter's Specialties Song Dog, The Primos Randy Anderson howlers, dan thomson red desert howler, etc.

I've never hear dingo sounds. But if they sound similar to wolves then they have a deeper sound than a coyote. a coyote's howl is higher pitched. They have various howls of different tones and pitches. Most older dogs have deeper voices and the younger ones and females, a higher pitch.

As far as the distress goes, you cant go wrong with johnny stewart calls, primos, crittr call, or any call from a quality custom call maker. The Johnny Stewart pc-7 has a great higher piched raspy sound. I love it. Closed reed calls are easier to learn than open reeds. However, open reeds aren't that hard to learn. With closed reed calls you get pretty much one sound. With open reeds you can get many sounds from one call. Howls, rabbit distress, various squalls and screams, high pitch, low pitch, clear, raspy.........and the list goes on. But I for one think that closed reed calls sound more realistic for rabbit distresses.

I suggest that you purchase a good calling video and a rabbit distress audio tape or two and a howling audio tape or two so you can get the idea of how you should sound when you are calling. You can also go to www.westernrivers.com and download different sounds. Im not shure, but my guess is that the dingos and wild dogs can be hunted in the same manner as coyotes??????

Chubb's great answer's.i'm into custom call's now. but there are some great commercial call's. the pc7 is what I called my first bear in with great sound. another favorate is a Haydel Goverment cottaintail called alot of game with that. I make Howler's, Yellerdog and Rich Cronk he's the man. he make's some dandy call's. he will send a tape of Howl's to with his call's. it will help alot. good Luck. Rick

Predator Masters Advertisers
Look here, many places to get calls and the likes from our advertisers. Let them know you saw it on PredatorMasters so they know their advertising dollars are well spent. The custon hand call builders can be reached by placing a post in the hand calls forum with their name as the title. Good luck, and welcome aboard.

Welcome to the board! You got some good answers. The open reed call would be your best call so that you can adjust it to the sound that works best for you. Besides dingos, what other varmint animals do you hunt in OZ?

Thanks to all the post! Good info there, thanks. I was wanting to get ahold of a tape or two to see how a coyote pairs up to a Dingo/wild dog. Our Dingos do not bark but only howl and maybe a few yips etc. A good video would be another idea to look at as well , to learn about how to call with the caller etc.
As for hunting here in Oz we have fox, pis, 6 types of deer, water buff& scrub bulls, wild donkies and camels as well as goats. That's about all I can think of at the moment. We do not have hunting seasons here so that is good but our gun laws are something else. Thats why I'm a bowhunter these days.
Keep the tips comming lads, this is a top site! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

welcome, i'm sorta new /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif can't say there are many dingos around here except my lazy fat red heeler (shes 1/2 dingo)

our dog is part dingo not 1/2 sorry about the typing error, anyways, my dad is yellerdog he makes custom calls, he makes howlers and distress. A distress may be the way to go because even if a dingo doesn't have the same pitched howl it probably won't be able to resist a nice easy to get rabbit! They are open reed, i would also request bearmanric's.
