Help me build my 35 Whelen

What I have is an old tang safety ruger action. I have awalys liked the tang safety rugers and I have always wanted a 35 whelen. This is the rifle that has a 250 savage barrel on it and I am going to rebarrel it to 35 whelen. So what I need to know is what barrel to get,{brand, twist, profile}. And who to do the work of fitting the barrel. Also what type of stock should I go with? Wood or synthetic? What sort of finish on the metal? I am building this to be my "Big" gun. I will take it and my 7mm mag elk hunting and if I ever go after a moose I will use it. I know it's not a real popular caliber but I have always wanted one and I have wanted to have a rifle built also. I will hand this down to my son some day. Just kinda wondering what it will cost too. I will take it in steps but ready to get started.
Thanks for any help

You might do a little researsh on that 250 Sav Ruger, it is a fairly rare item and might be worth wild to sell it and pick up a Ruger in 30-06 to build on.

I'm not a big Ruger guy and don't know if they came in long and short actions but for sure it most likely has a blocked mag for a short cartridge. You might want to see if an 06 round will even fit the mag on that rifle.

If you build a 35 Whelen.

Stainless or Blued, it's up to you whatever you think looks best. On a hunting gun I like a mat finish

Conture, most barrel makers go with a fairly heavy barrel for a 35 so I'd go with the lightest offered, you have to carry it.

Stock, you can't beat a synthetic for durability, stability, lightweight and no charactor. Wood if you want pretty.

You can find a gunsmith you TRUST and have him order a barrel, fit it and finish it. Send it to a Barrel maker that does instalations. I've used Pac Nor and they did a superb job for me building my 6x45mm(I'll be shooting it at the Egg Shoot in Las Cruses). ER Shaw built my 6mm-204 Barrel(I installed) I'll be hunting with it in NM)

I built my 35 Whelen on a Rem 721(30-06) and just had it Rebored to 35 Whelen, no barrel fitting or finishing involved even have open sights and now have a very accurate cut rifled barrel. I dropped it into an after market Rem 700 BDL Stock.

It's a long action that someone put a 250 savage barrel on. With it being a long action it doesn't want to eject the spent brass. I thought about reaming it to 25-06 but have always wanted a whelen so I am just going to build me one on that action. The stock has a crack so I will replace it. On gunsmiths I don't know any that's why I wondered who you guys have used and trust. If I could send it to a barrel place that would be great too. I have thought about duracoating the metal after the barrel is installed. I guess it won't be a custom gun but it will be to me.

Sounds like a great project then. ER Shaw makes some great hunting barrels and will do the installation and finishing. They are pretty reasnabe also, go to their site and you can get a handle on their prices. Do the same for PacNor.

Find a reputable smith that has a 35 W reamer, or send it to PacNor,etc. Some folks have had decent luck with Shaw barrels, but you get what you pay for. I like SS barrels for hunting rifles, get a bead blast matte finish....cerakote it if you wish, later.
For a Whelen, I would get a 14 or 12 twist barrel. The 16's that Remington uses don't handle long heavy bullets worth a darn! I know this first hand from my 700 Classic! Anything over 200 grains, unless it's a round nose, won't stabilize!
Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the info guys. I will look into pac-nor. I want a good barrel on this thing, doubt I will ever shoot it out. But I want it to shoot good

Sigpros, you may want to consider looking on gunbroker and picking up a Rem 700 "Classic", you will be a lot of money ahead and they shoot like a house a fire!

Buds gun shop hs one right now. Check the used gun section under long guns.

Just not much of remington guy. Ruger did a run of 35 whelens a couple years ago. Thing is I have this gun that I need to do something with, and I have awalys wanted a whelen. And I have awalys wanted a "custom" gun. I know I will have more in it than it will be worth but it will be mine and original. And I have 500 hornady bullets I bought for $6 a box and ? I don't know, I can talk myself into about anything.

A 35 Whelen is certainly not overbore. It would probably take 20-25 thousand rounds to wear out a barrel. It is more likely to be wore out with a cleaning rod.
