Help Me Decide On A Scope......Rem.XR-100 .204Ruger....

My "dream rifle", the new Rem. XR-100 .204Ruger needs some glass! I really like Burris glass, as my other .204 has a Fullfield Bplex 4.5-14x42mm... This XR-100 needs more...the Signature Series Burris's donot come with the Ballistic-Plex, but a Mil-Dot Plex, which looks like what I'll end p with in a Burris....

I have also been eyeing the Leupold VX-III with the "Varmint Hunter" reticle...It has awesome looking graduations for wind drift also....

At any rate, I want either a 6.5-20X, or 8-32X, I plan on stretching it out! Signature Burris' are around $550, and the new Varmint Hunter reticle Leupold's in the $725 range....gobblr addict /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have a VH reticle in a 4.5-14X Leupold/Savage Striker .243 WSSM, and it works just fine. I also have several Ball. Plex Burris's that r also nice, as well as 1 of the Burris Ball. Mil-Dot, that's great on the rig i have it on. But if i were to get another ballistic reticle in a higher-powered scope i'd opt for Holland's ART reticle calibrated in 1.5 MOA stadia lines for trajectory compensation (soon to be available in Leupold scopes, BTW), or maybe the Leupold TMR (Tactical Milling Reticle). It provides std. mil-dot trajectory compensation, in .5 mil. fine-line stadia. BUT these reticles may have more trajectory compensation than u need. (just mentioned them since u mentioned the Ball. Mil-Dot). I can't wait to see the best practical tactical ballistic reticle ever designed so far to come out in a higher-powered scope-- right here-- www.rapidreticle.com hopefully that'll happen soon.

gobblr,
Check out this site, it's a shop up in Winchester, Va. They sell Leupolds and offer a huge variety of custom reticles....

www.premierreticles.com

I bought a 6 1/2 x 20 VX III for my 204 from them last year with one of the range compensating reticles, but there are plenty other options. I was very pleased with the service. I sent them my rifle, they chronoed it, plotted the pips on the crosshairs, made and installed the reticle, installed the scope and shipped it back to me in less than 2 weeks.

Call them and ask for Chris.

I got the Leupold Boone & Crocket. The crosshairs are heavier than the Varmint and they only have 10mi windage. I thought these would be more visible in low light. The Varmint might be better for ranging smaller game though. Very happy with the Leupolds.

Buy the Leupold, it's nice, it's what I put on my .204 XR. I haven't gotten into fooling with the reticle yet, but I will. Are you handloading for yours?

Ole..Yes, I am reloading the .204...I have not shot the XR-100 but my Rem. Mod. 7 I shoot a 39gr. Sierra Blitzking with 29gr. BLC-2....I believe its 29? Sierra and the Hornady 40gr. both shoot well in it! gobblr addict

I have been looking at alot of glass myself lately. I also prefer the mil-dot or B-plex, V-plex reticles.

Just my 2 cents.

Nikon- really like the glass, short on high power mil-dot or varmint reticles, not sure on hold zero, zoom from zero & turret repeat

Bushnell Elies- good glass to very good, high power with mil-dots, hold zero great, zoom from zero off a bit, turret not sure. Mil-dot set at mid power (can work with it sighted on high power using 1" grid @ 100).

Burris - good glass to very good, B-Plex reticles, hold zero ? , zoom from zero supposed to be better than most, turret hold zero ? B-plex set a 14 power. (neg. for me, not even like mil-dot, can't use 1" grid formula on higher power)

Leopold 2 & 3's - good glass, just to pricey in high power when I compare to others. Frankly the Bushnell & Burris glass seems as good ex. edge to edge, contrast, bright, full mag.eye relieve etc. and the Nikon seems better.

Mueller - Reading good things but have not tried or held one.

Weaver G.S. - Nice but short on mil-dot & varmint reticles.

Sightron - Nice glass, mil-dots set at highest power(nice for me). Turrets zero, supposed to be very good. I liked what I saw.

For what it's worth I am leaning towards a Bushnell 4200, Burris Fullfield or Sightron 2. But, I have time. If Nikon adds some reticles that will also be a go. "Free" spotting scope from Burris is also tempting (grin)

Good luck.....

gobblr addict, get yourself some Reloader 10X to try with those 39 Sierras. This is my rifle now, I use 26.8grs in Win brass, Rem 7 1/2's and an OAL of 2.4" and I get sub 1/2" groups easy and velocity runs just over 3900 fps. I really like this XR!!

I have a Leupold 6.5-20x LR with the varminters reticle on it and I wouldn't change it for any of those other scopes, except for maybe an 8.5-25x Leupold. I've tried a variety of scopes already and when it gets down to the "nitty-gritty" I'll stick with Leupold.

The thing I like about the Leupold 6.5-20x 40mm LR is it not having an adjustable objective on the bell, you can mount it real low, I like that!
