Help on a tanned bobcat fur

Cue

I used a solution of water, salt & battery acid on this fur. It is now done with no hair slippage and is very soft & pliable. The problem is it still smells a little like wet dog. Can a guy wash this with soap, shampoo a few times to clear this up. Any help would be great. Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You can
...but you may not get it as soft as it is now, once you dry it again.
Was the skin oiled? If so...I'd go through those motions again when your done.

I have not oiled the skin yet. This isn't a true tan I don't think? What I want to do is make a rug out of it. If I get the smell out can i put my batting and felt on?

Yeah, I'd make sure it was dried good though.
If your just rugging that thing, you could pin it out while it's drying. You'll keep it flatter and will get a little extra size out of it.

I would just air it out outside for a while. I don't know a whole lot about tanning but have done several hides by the method you did, just pickling w/ battery acid and after I wetted one again the hide was never the same the hide got real crinkly and when trying to rebreak it as it dried the second time it started to crack and split. This is just my experience with 1 bobcat hide. I will never rewet another as it ruined the texture of the only one I did rewet.
