Help With AR Gas Block

I'm doing some work on a couple friends' AR's. They are wanting to go to a scope and get rid of the iron sights. The gas block is the mil-spec triangular style with the tapered drift pins and drift pin channels cut into the bottom of the barrel. I'm looking to replace it with a low profile style without the sight one it. One that looks like the block on the Bushmaster Varminter or Remington R15 would be nice, but I can't find one that is the drift pin style. Anyone know where to find one? Or is there a way to use a standard set screw gas block with the drift pin channels? Would I need to get a jig to make set screw indents? If so, would the drift pin channels show after the new block was installed or get in the way of the set screw indents?

If you have a dremel or cutoff wheel, just cut the sight part off the gas block they already have and spray a little paint after you get the contour you want. Picture the R15 gas block and start cutting and grinding.

This is your best option. Just get some high temp BBQ grill paint and paint it when you are done. You won't find any gas blocks that will fit the current taper pins, the sight tower is installed on the barrel and they are drilled together, so only the original one will fit properly. If you really want a new gas block there are extended ones Larue's that should cover the taper pin holes.

You will never find a block that will have the taper-pins used to hold it on, or at least one where the slots will line up with a new block.

The new block will cover the slots in the barrel.

If you want dimples in the barrel, I would recommend installing the block and making sure it is set up with perfect alignment. Then test it to make sure it works.... Just because you have it installed perfectly, doesn't necessarily mean that the barrel was drilled perfectly!

Once you are certain it works correctly, remove the bock and carefully drill the dimples in the marks left by the set-screws.

+1, this is wisdom.

I have done the methods described by r15rem and Dtech above and they both work well. There are also several "clamp on" gas blocks that work well and don't require the dimples to be drilled like a set screw unit needs.
