Henry .22 Mag for 'yotes or bobcats?

Hello everyone, newbie here on the site. and so far I am excited to spend more time here. I have a question about the using a 22 mag for coyotes and or bobcats. I am thinking 60 - 80 yards typically upwards of around 100 yards (max). I was looking into the 40 grain v-max bullet, or the 50 grain hollow point rounds. If it is plausible to take 'yotes and bobs with the 22 mag. all your input is greatly appreciated.

ps- looking forward to learning from you all, as I am just now trying to get started in predator hunting...

First thing they don't make a 22 magnum 40gr. V-max and Id stay away form the 50gr. ammo. I like the Rem 33gr. v-max or the 30gr. v-max ammo they work greta on bobcats and coyotes and not hard on furs. The old federal 50gr hp are no longer made CCI is now loading them for Federal and the velocity has been droped. ~Marco

Given the ranges you specified, I feel certain you can kill with what you currently have available if you do your part. I've killed many called coyotes and bobcats with a .22 Magnum rifle and handgun. Over the years I've used all brands of ammo in various weights and bullet design. I never cared for the Federal 50 gr. at all for the velocity just wasn't there. Winchester 40 gr. HP and SP, along with CCI Maxi-Mag have worked very well for me. I also have several thousand rounds of the discontinued PMC Predator in both HP and SP and they too have killed very well. One of my favorite bobcat rifles is a slicked up .22 Magnum Ruger 10/22:)

Good luck to you and welcome.

thank you for the quick replys.

marco, i was mistaken. the first few rounds I shot out of the rifle were the v-max. I then switched to the 40gr bullets, I think they are called psp or something. my mistake, the other ones were 33gr that you mentioned.

mrgunslinger, I have a rifle shooting a 7.62x54 - I assume that is too big for coyotes as well as my 12ga. the 7.62x54 is not something I want to use on bobcats because I would like to keep some pelts, not sure how the 12ga would damage bobcat pelts either. thus why I am looking to keep the caliber small for the bobs.

ces, what kind of range are you getting with the 40 gr sp out of the 10/22? if you dont mind me asking. i assume it is scoped?

I've killed bobcat from contact distance to out past 100 yards with a .22 Magnum. My 10/22 Magnum has a .920" bull barrel and is topped with a Tasco "Varmint" 2.5X10 with mil-dot reticle. My longest shot to date on a bobcat with a .22 Magnum handgun was about 70 yards using a S&W Model 48 with an 8-3/8" barrel fired single action.

My wife and kids got me a Ruger single six for Christmas 2 year ago and all I use is the magnum cylinder would love to kill a bobcat with it! But anyhow the 22 magnum in a rifle was made for varmints like bobcats and fox and its all I use no need for big centerfire 22s or 6mms unless your going long range. Most of the shots Ive made on cats has been around 50yds. and the 22 mag V-maxs work great. Use a .223 or 250 at that range and youll turn them inside out. ~marco

100 yards max you will be ok.

stick with the heavier bullets. CCI maxi mag HP 40 gr. winchester 40 gr hp, and my gun LOVES remington 40 gr hp.

its a fantastic bobcat gun to 125 yards. As mentioned its not enough gun for coyote however that big yote in my avatar didn't even twitch after he took a maxi mag to the boiler room@20 yards. try to keep it 100 yards or less on coyote. be ready for a follow up shot!

If you are serious about song dogs get yourself a centerfire for sure. you will have more range a less runners. With all the effort of getting out there locating and then calling in song dogs its a shame to have to let one walk because your gun wasn't enough for the range.

Only reason I don't like the 40gr bullets is they might mess up the hide and the way fur prices are these days you want as little problems as possible. The V-maxs don't exit most of the time. And Ive killed a truck load of coyotes with 22 magnum with no trouble. ~Marco

I am leaning more towards the bobcats, but I just want to make sure that if a coyote walks at least within 100 I can drill him and have enough firepower to get the job done. the shot placement isnt a problem for me, but not having stuck a yote with the 22 mag yet had me thinking.

also, I have the opportunity to buy a .270 with a scope 3-9x42 for $400. how would that be for shooting the 90gr - 113gr bullets and say out to 250 yards? is it worth the investment in the rifle to go out to that yardage? the .270 would then become my deer rifle also with the 150gr. what do you all think?
