Hevi shot Coyote shells in Oklahoma

I was looking at these to try. I live in Oklahoma and was told they were not legal here. Is this true? What are some you Okies using in your shotguns?

I haven't heard a thing about them being illegal, only thing is 00 Buck as far as I know.

Thats all the local Rangers told us we COULDN'T use /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Yes they are illegal. In Oklahoma you can't use anything larger than BB shot (.18) for hunting except for waterfowl (makes no sense to me but that is the law). Dead Coyote is T shot which is larger than BB shot so legally you can't use it. #4 buck is illegal too. I've been using Hevi Shot BB shot and have killed a coyote at 60 steps with it. It patterns great out of my Rem 870 with a full turkey choke so you might give something similar a try because I think its discontinued now.

I need to do a little research on the size of loads I guess,I never was really sure about all the T, BB, B, B.S. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif sizing of shotgun loads.

Seems like there was a discusion about T shot sized loads when we were talking about it but I didn't really know what the difference was /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif,,it was kind of a round table type talk.

I know now that I won't spend $25.00 for a box of them anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

DLT is correct. I have used both DC with T shot and #4 buck. I do some calling with the local game warden, and he said he wouldnt give a ticket for using either when calling predators. It would not stand in front of a judge, and it is your choice, because the game laws make those two illegal. It is definately one of the game laws that dont make sence here in Oklahoma.

Well I even had a young game warden whot told me they were ok because they were smaller than BB shot but they aren't smaller. They it is just a little bit bigger. So he was wrong. I don't know about down in SE Oklahoma but I've been checked 5 times in the last year by our two local game wardens (I was only checked 1 time in my previous 30+ years of hunting) so I toe the line on the rules. You can use buckshot for personal defense so just get those yotes to attack ya! Someone had a webpage on here awhile back that had all the different size of shot with # of BB's in an ounce but I lost it. Maybe someone will help us out and find it for us.

I've got a meeting with Shane Fields, the game ranger that talked at the OK Hunt last month, at 4:00 tomorrow to get a night hunt permit for this weekend,,I will definitly find out a solid answer!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hevi-shot comes in #2 size and that would fall within the OK laws. That is enough to reach out and touch some coyotes and it's about the same as shooting BB sized lead. I wouldn't hesitate to use it at all.

R Buker thanks for your input. I was really curious about the #2 hevishot because Academy Sports has a bunch of it while the hevishot BB shot isn't being made anymore. So you don't think I wouldn't be loosing much killing power by using it? I still have a couple of boxes of the bb shot left (actually I think its B shot to be technically correct). It has been a great load and I hate to change things up.

DLT, All those coyotes were attacking....honest.LOL. I had this conversation with someone the other day(the use of #4 and T), and it is illegal, as you stated. I was given the nod by this particular game warden, but that will only help if he is the one checking.
Another question, how do you suppose this law came to be?

I use #2 heavy shot for fox and I tell you it patterns so much better than the T shot in my 870 super mag with a extra full choke. I have been amazed with the performance. when we skin out our fox most of the pellets pass through and are caught in the hide in the opposite side. Granted they are much smaller than a coyote but if you can't use any thing larger than BB I would give these a try.

My local game warden will write you a ticket, and confiscate the gun & ammo if he catches you using anything larger than BB for anything other than waterfowl. I use 3 1/2" Winchester Premium Turkey Loads in shot sizes 4,5,&6, and have'nt lost a yote yet. I know for sure they are legal.
