Hevi Shot "dead hog"?

guess

Michelle and I hunted hogs this evening for a bit,we hit the normal areas first but didn't see any hogs.By now we were a good ways from the truck,so I told Michelle to go up to the hill and watch for any hogs coming across to go to the fields for the evening and I would go get the truck. I pulled up to the edge of the hill to wait for her to come back at dark.I could see she wasn't were I had told her to be ,she was down on the other side of the hill.About then I saw a large group of hogs coming over the hill right where I had told her to stand.I grabbed the 12 ga. which was loaded with Hevi Shot "dead coyote" it also has a red dot scope on it! I then head for a small stand of trees between them and where they were headed! I barely got there in time and it was getting darker by the second.A few small pigs filtered through but I couldn't see them through the scope because the dot was blinding me,so I turned it off and started looking for another hog close enough to shoot. Then I saw this big gray form moving across at about 40 yards,as soon as I could identify it as a hog ,I raised the gun and fired! hogs ran in every direction, except the one I shot at it was laying right there!
she weighed 180 pounds! My wife sure wasn't happy she didn't get to shoot at one!
I have been wanting to try the dead coyote load on hogs for some time now.I was kind of wanting to shoot a smaller hog in the head to try it out. The pattern was centered on the opposite shoulder from the one in the picture ,but if you look carefully you can tell the leg you see is jello, it was the exit side, but I think the damage was caused by the lower portion of the pattern rather than the shot exiting! I was very pleased with the performance of the load!

Nice, Glenn. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You sure do have a lot of big hogs up there. I started to get some of those loads the other day, but they are kind of pricey! I went with the Win. Supreme 3 inch #4 buckshot instead. Got a bobcat with it this morning, so I guess it will work. What are you having to give for a box? It was $23.95 for a box of 10 here.

Congratulations on one most excellent kill. Were you aiming for a head shot? Or center of mass? How dark was it when you shot?

When you see how deadly, consistent, and effective those itty bitty hevi-shot T's actually are, and how big a pig you knocked down in one? shot.... I can't believe that some people's first reaction is to whine about the price.

I've hunted with 0000 buckshot for decades, until this last season when I switched completely to Hevi-shot. Buckshot doesn't pattern, kill, or penetrate near as well as Dead Coyote and it puts double the number of pellets on target.

Your hog is awesome. When you get the critter cleaned out and have a chance to assess the damage, how would you compare it to the meat damage done by a rifle slug?

Nahuatl ,
it was getting too dark quickly{legal in Texas to hunt hogs in the dark},I decided on a center mass shot. another 5 seconds and wouldn't have been able to tell they were hogs, except for the noise {grunting}.
there was a lot of jelled blood behind both shoulders, but as far as comparable to the damage done by a slug,I think the slug do a lot more damage to a cocentrated area, however there is no doubt that if the shot were taken at say 20 yards or less I would have lost a lot of meat!
I will admit that they are pricy, especially at first when you have to waste a few sighting your gun in like a riffle ,but once you get the right combination, how many would you really need? not many and if you take home a kill with nearly every shot fired ,you can't really put a price limit on that!
