Hog calling tips?

For the past week or so I have had a couple feeders out with some trail cameras to see what time the hogs are rolling in. They have been mostly showing up in the late evening and early morning like 1AM & 2AM. I have the feeders to go off at 7am & 5pm.

I put a couple new calls on my FoxPro yesterday (Lil Piggy & Hurtin Hog). I went out around 5pm & stayed in the stand till 6pm. When I was setting up the caller and started with a low volume; I heard some movement and some hog grunting but nothing would come out and commit even after turning up the volume and I would only run the caller for a couple minutes or so then mute it for a bit.

I also should put that I am hunting over a hay lot where they are putting hay out for the cattle which is right next to a good size creek.

My question is there a specific time frame I should run the caller? Or certain sounds I should be playing for this time of year? This was my first time ever trying to call for hogs which after I get my night vision set-up back and going I plan on doing some sitting and calling at night.

I am guessing that if there were hogs close, the volume should have been turned down or off. The higher volume may have spooked them and/or made them wary. What call(s) were you using?

I always start with Foxpro's Feeding Frenzy 1 and then go to Big Sparring Boars. This has worked on all of them I've called except 1 big sow that came in to Sow Protection. It works.

Aggie- I'm going to ask a question that may be obvious in my video, but my computer sucks and I'll watch it at home later.

My question is when do you decide to play the call? How loud? and from what distance are you calling them in?? Lastly, do you already know hogs are in the vivacity or are you calling blind?

you didn't ask me, but I'll tell you anyway. I usually call areas that are tough to get into with out spooking the hogs out. depending on how close I am to the area I think they will come from determines how loud I call. Usually pretty loud though. Hogs are very vocal and very loud except when just being social. Most of the sounds I've developed for calling are intended to bring them running and most social sounds bring them in slow as curious.
We have documented calling hogs as far as a mile, its difficult to determine how far some have traveled, but I have no doubt we've called them further.
As far as blind calling goes, yes we do some "blind" calling. WE do suspect there are hogs near by or we don't call. If they can't hear you they wont come. Generally speaking we don't call to hogs we can see unless they are on property we can't hunt or they are traveling away from us faster than we can get to them. then We will call to them.
Calling hogs is just like calling any other animal. Sometimes they come sometimes they don't. They will nearly always try to get down wind of the caller. Again try watching our youtube channel to pic up hints. I will be doing a series on calling hogs in the near future. We are working on it now.
