Hoggin With Just A Blade

so.....im going on a hog hunt in NE texas here in the spring with a bunch of guys i was in Iraq with. We will be doing the guided thing, by a guy we were all in Iraq with. He uses catch dogs for 200 to 300 pound porks. He said that we could shoot the hogs but most perfer to use just a blade.

Well, im down for preaty much anything, and when we all get back together it seems that it is always a "test of manhood tourny" with us. from knife and tomahawk throwing contest to playing a game we call "Mumbly Peg" with metal tent stakes thrown into the ground at bare feet to see who flinches. the winner is whoever lasts the longest. you get the picture.

i know for sure ill take a rifle and pistol with me but...im gonna take one with a knife. just to say i did type thing. also im am known for (not bragging here) but being one of the more hard cores of the group.

if i could id take a plastic spoon and kill the beast just in tradition of hard core-nes.

so im need some recomendations of a good hog knife. i was thinking of my old trusty KaBar but dont know.

Briz

what ya got fells?

Your KaBar will work just fine. I would say an 8" blade works best, but I watched my buddy take a 300ish with a 4 inch buck folder. I am sure you will have a great time.

PS: Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Check the picture in my post "followup".
That hog was killed with a 3.75" folding Kershaw. Yes, I would have used a bigger knife if I had one, but a sharp pocket knife will do the trick. Your kabar will do a good job for you.
Of course, for hard core you really should use a rock

a rock....YES! i think a rounded river rock the size of my fist. that would be hard core if i ever did see it!! LOL

I've killed hundreds of pigs with a knife. I don't understand the thought that's its something crazy. The guide will leg it and more than likely flip it for u. You won't be at a Mexican stand off with a pig. My advice to u is take a knife that's longer than 6" and make sure it's sharp. Never take your knife out until your told to. Your guide will probably tell u but the problem I had when taking new hunters is that they want to slam the blade into the pig. It's very dangerous to do so. A good friend of mine will never be able to make a fist again because he was guiding some retards from up north. He had already told these guys the rules. but when he flipped the pig he was pointing to the guy where to stick it the jackass stabbed his hand severing nerves. Just put the tip of the knife on the pigs vital area and push. Once it's in work that knife like a saw and cut downwards. My favorite knife is the boarhunter by cold steel great knife. The one on the right was stuck with a buck folding knife but it couldn't reach the vitals. Had to pass him the cold steel. If you want to have some fun tie that sucker up by yourself. Lol

Years ago after winning a nice chunk of money at an ASA archery tourney in Florida, I stayed a few extra days and treated myself and a buddy to a hog hunt..
We had each shot two good hogs a piece with our bows but had been catching a lot of crap from our so called guide "junior" for being Yankees (I don't consider us Kansans as Yankees) and shooting them with bows. "Real men used dogs and knives"..
So anyhow two hogs a piece was plenty, but I couldn't help myself and began to mimic juniors deep south accent, telling him I would pay for the next hog if he would use his dogs and knife it. Long story short a little later we got to watch Junior running for dear life in the palmetto..
Junior required some stitches and the ranch owner asked if he had been showing Yankees how to knife hogs again!

DWA is right, hogs are stuck, not stabbed. Blade up/edge down, tip on hog tight behind elbow, push in and up, sweep tip down, done.
Stabbing allows for too little control, dogs or people can get under blade, or tip skates and cuts someone.
And people shooting in the middle of my dogs and me scares the crap out of me.

DOA needed a better guide, or better dogs!

Every so often I do ditch the dogs. Caught three on my own this year. Biggest was approx 15.0 lbs.

Caught a 200 lb sow last year but she was in the river and I swam her down.

Briz,
Enjoy your trip, hog hunting is a blast. Just keep cool and be safe.
Oh, and thanks to you and your buddies for all you did for the rest of us.

You'll have fun BRIZZ. And if you ever go to Florida stay clear of guides named Junior and don't let Gman talk you into that swim!

We stick most of our hogs unless a bullet is needed.

If the catch dogs are doing there job it should not be a problem at all.

This is my 11 year old son sticking his first pig

The only problem is it is more addictive than crack and you will end up with a whole yard full of dogs before you know it.

I agree with a couple of the other guys. It's not as exciting as you might think. By the time the blade comes into play the struggle will already be over. The hog is stuck after he is secured either by legging it and pinning it down or holding it in a "wheelbarrow" position. There is no real bravery needed at this point. If you want to be "hard core" watch your guide leg the pig and pay close attention to the technique he uses to put the hog on the ground. If you get lucky enough to catch a couple, let the next one yourself. That's where the real fun is. Good luck and thanks for your service to our Country. Guys like you and your buds are why we have something to celebrate this week.

My daughter called one year while in college. She said she had gone hog hunting the past weekend. I asked what she used since all her guns were at the house. She described how she had harvested three hogs using a knife. Made a father proud to have raised such a redneck daughter.

Id agree with some of the other fellas here. The excitement and action isnt in sticking or killin' the hog, its in getting aholt and wrasslin' that sucker down. Maybe its different for someone thats never done it but not me. First timers usually always hesitate....but thats too be expected, I did too the first time I went in on a hog. I think its called self preservation hahaha!

Never did find much use in the old wheel barrow technique that some favor. I think a lot of guys try the back legs because they feel safer (front end is the bad end!!). We usually reach for a far front leg and try to knock em over. Once a hog is on his side he is pretty much done for. Plus we have mostly back end dogs....prefer to go for the back end/legs/nuts, not the ears or snout. Most dogs that like the front end or that are rough dont seem to last too long.

One thing we have learned over the years is to keep your catch dog leashed until your close enough to see whats going on and can get to the fight quickly. For example, strike dogs had bayed a hog in the bottom of the canyon and we were on top. We let the catch dog loose and headed down. Ended up being some really thick brush that slowed us down and took us 15-20 minuted to crawl over, under and through that 6 foot brush to get to the dogs and boar. They were in a small little hole in the bottom of the canyon, tight quarters and not enough room for the dogs to stay away and evade those tusks. 3 dogs got tore up pretty bad, we had to use the stapler on two and the catch dog we had to carry out. Letting your catch dog loose too soon may lead to dogs getting hurt or killed. We always keep our catch dog on leash until we know exactly what the situation is.
