I seen a home made ghillie someone made somewhere and cant remember where.Anyone have any ideas or instructions? I think it was based over burlap.
Would anyone know where to get the leafy material or the netting or what ever is used?

Thanks Jerryboy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ghillie Suit in 7 steps or so...

#1. I acquired a pair of mechanics coveralls from the army surplus shop. ($40)

#2. I sewed on padding and extra canvas around the knees, and sewed in an internal belt around my waist.

#3. I acquired some army hammock netting from a military catalog ( Brigade Quartermasters, $20)

#4. I sewed on the netting for my back. I anchored it around the sides and anchored some in the middle for strength. Instead of one giant piece of netting covering my whole body, I am placing the netting in sections that do not span any of my joints. This makes it more flexible and easier to attach.

#5. I bought some burlap at a fabric store. I got two tones of dark and light brown, and a tone of darkish green.( $10). I got about four square yards.

#6. I sewed some netting onto my boonie hat and added burlap strips and frazzled them by pulling off the smaller horizontal pieces of burlap. Quick Tip: Try to add the burlap outside because it can get messy, especially while cutting. And shred the burlap outside, this is extremely messy.

#7. I put burlap and assorted cloth on legs. Then I did the same to the back and finally the arms. It is important that all these parts look the same in color, or the suit will look funny.

#8. Now that I am mainly done ( a ghillie suit is never really done) I am going to field test it. For this, my spotter and I go to a field which is about 200 yards wide, and my spotter sets up a spotting scope and tries to find me on the other side of the field.

I got these instructions from a website, there are many ways to make one, but they all use the same basics... Good Luck!! I hope this helps...

Maj. Plaster's guide to construction calls for the overalls or flightsuit to be "inside-out" so that the pockets are on the inside.

That detail may not be all that important for coyote hunting.

If you'd like to purchase some great material for the ghillie, look no further than www.BushRag.com they make some great stuff at a very reasonable price..(Note: Robert...potential advertiser /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) I really like their stuff. They have COMPLETE kits too. Might save some time.

I have a Shaggie by Safari. It's heavy, hot, and it isn't finished the way I thought it should be. The material should have been shredded, instead I received it with large strips. I've had to do that by hand. Very time consuming. Pain in the perverbial butt. Jute is a pretty good material too, maybe cheaper than burlap? I only use the head gear these days, I'll hunker down under a bush, tree or whatever, wear some turkey hunting gloves and my rastafarian headgear mon. I be jammin.

Lightness and air flow, I know it gets damn hot in Indiana and cold too. It has to be big enough to accomadate heavier winter wear too. In my opinion, their ain't nothin that breaks up your pattern better than a well made and well layed-out ghillie. Bad ones are just that, bad. Heavy, ungainly, restrictive and snaggy. You'll be dragging all sorts of crap along with you at times, that's really a pain in the poop shoot out here in the west, you're likely to drag something you don't want to drag.

Bob,

For shredding that burlap....

Find yourself a gravel road, string your suit from a rope tied to your bumper, drive until shredded to your satisfaction.

In all reality...

when it comes to coyote calling...

Instead of making an entire military type head-to-toe Ghillie Suit, you can just as easily accomplish the same thing by taking a BDU top ( go one size bigger than what you normally would wear ) and just using that to assemble your netting and materials on to. Should cut down on the weight and hassle. For coyote calling, your legs are covered/hidden by the surrounding brush anyway.

Then either have a Hat like Bob mentions, or make a shoulder-wide "hood" out of netting on your jacket so that you can flip it up on your regular hat and have it flow down to your shoulders, like a sniper's cape.

Its fun to experiment with all that stuff, but I found the whole ghillie-scene to be more of a hinderance than a help... Have Fun !

Jerry go to OTHER CALLING EQUIPMENT AND CRITTER GETTING TECHNIQUES. Go back 45 days and read the info posted under "home made ghille suit" by Furface. the date of the last post is 4/20/2002. there is most everything you'll need for a home made suit. Good luck with your project and keep us posted on your final product.

I made a home made ghillie suit. I been using it this year for filing deer in one of are back fields. The deer tend to not even know your out there. Till they come by you and you jump up and yell at them for getting too close. I just another ghillie suit, one of my grandpa neighbor's was a army sniper and he still had his ghillie laying around, he had no use for it. So he gave that one to me.Much better then mine, had padding on the arms, chest, and knee's.

IF any one want's a picture of em, i would be glad to send them to you.

Mike
