Home-made scent cover?

Has anybody ever tried making a scent cover by boiling some kind of natural plant material like cedar limbs?

I realize that theres no way to completely mask human scent but I was just thinking that it might help when that huge "turdy point buck"

that we all dream about is standing near or all the way downwind.

I have boiled up acorns and hemlock branches and dirt. I used it in a spray bottle. It seemed to smell natural and I had deer come in close while using it.

Thats exactly what I was wanting to do. I hadnt thought about dirt, but, me being cheap and all, thought that if i could make a cover scent, that would be better than buying some.
Was it a strong natural smell? Something that you opened the lid and got a nose full? Or a faint, barely there smell?

It a relatively mild smell. Don't use your wives favorite pot, trust me it's not a good idea:)

drscott- i mixed up some of that and put it in a spray bottle but i guess it clogged somethin up cause it won't spray.

What kind of container did you put it in?

I read some time ago that a guy would gather pungent native vegetation, like say cedar, and chop and crush it up.Then put it in a jar and pour grain alcohol or vodka over it.Then let it set in fridge for a few weeks. Then strain through cloth and put in a spray bottle. The alcohol would evaporate and leave only the natural scent.

You don't need to boil pine boughs.Just rub them into your clothing and you're good to go also keep a few in with clothing between use.

I just put it in a plain spray bottle like you can get in the garden center or with the cleaning supplies. Just make sure you are mixing it with hot water or the baking soda won't disolve. and use a full gallon of water. I always put the baking soda in the hot water and mix it in good then add the hydroger peroxide and the soap last and just gently mix it in or it will suds up on you.

Another tip that will help keep your scent down is just washing your body off with unscented soap and leaving it on your body to dry. I will put a little liquid soap in a bit of water and use a wash cloth to bath off with and just let it dry on your body. Bacteria are what causes most of our odors and a little soap left on your body is anti bacterial. That is the same reason the spray works, soap and hydrogen peroxide are antibacterial and baking soda helps absorb odors. I take all these precautions but just always remember and this goes with all wild game, you can fool their eyes and ears, but you won't fool their nose. All this helps reduce your odor but you will never eliminate it. You probably produce more odors from your mouth than the rest of your body. I hunt a lot in the mountains with thermals and whirling winds so I feel it might give me a few extra seconds and that may be the difference between a shot opportunity and not.
