Homemade E-caller breaking up at higher volume.

I just wired up a homemade caller using a Velleman amp, Speco speaker, mp3 player and a Radio Shack 9V radio shack remote control car battery pack. I used a shield cable from the mp3 player to the amp. The wire from the amp to the Speco is the wire that came with the speaker. I have everything sodered together now. The sound is fine until I get to the 3/4 of the volume, then it starts cutting in and out. Any ideas?

First thought is that you're either not delivering enough current to the amp, or you're overdriving the amp input with a preamplified output on the MP3.

Tell us which model Velleman amp and which MP3 player and it might help narrow it down some.

I don't remeber the model, but it's the Velleman kit sold by Hobbytron. The same one most folks on here seem happy with. The mp3 player is a Creative MuVo FX FM. The batter is a 9.6 volt, not "9" like I first typed.

Velleman amp kits available through Hobbytron come in varieties from 1 amp thru 20 amps. How many amps is yours? Did you assemble it yourself?

Most also have a 12 volt requirement.

It's the K4001 amp. Velleman lists the power supply as 8-18 volts. But maybe more voltage would help.

Yes, I put the amp together myself. I don't think it's a faulty build, but I could be wrong. It sounds great up to that 3/4 volume. Of course even at 1/2 volume it will hurt your ears sitting beside it.

Possibly your new battery pack still needs conditioned by being charged and discharged a few times, but otherwise you ought to be getting enough current for the VK4001.

Can't say for certain, but It may be that the headphone jack output /input to the amp/ is too high. If that be the case, not taking the volume past 3/4 would be the simplest and most obvious solution. An inline volume-control wheel thingy from RS would be another way to go. Adjusting the gain potentiometers on Nady 151/351 transmitter will also achieve the same thing should you go wireless with either of them.

(Don't know offhand if the DKW1-LT has the same adjustments, Dmcgee. Glad to see that you are on your way to getting yours fixed, though.)
