I have a box that I could use. I just need to modify it to make a trap. The box has a door on it. What do yall think I should do to make the door close behind the animal?

Coyotekiller, I've made lots of box traps over the years. All you have to do is use a little imagination. I'm at work now so I don't have time to get into any detail but when I get home tonight I'll get back on and go over some of my designs.

Sorry it took awhile to get back to you. The easiest way to rig a box trap trigger is to get yourself a wood rat trap. A mouse trap will work but a rat trap has a stronger spring and is better.

Then take some 2x2's and a piece 3/4" plywood big enough to use for a door. Use the 2x2's to frame a "slide" so the door slides up and down vertically in front of the opening. Think of a guillotine.

Then take the rat trap and attach it to the trap well back from your entrance. Good construction glue like Liquid Nails should work. You can also use screws instead of glue but be sure to pre-drill the holes in the rat trap. If you don't you'll split the wood.

Now you need to drill a hole thru the rat trap right below the trigger. Drill the hole all the way into your box trap.

Get a 1 ft. piece of bailing or picture hanging wire, then reach inside the box trap and poke the wire up thru the hole you just drilled. Attach the wire to the trigger. Attach a soup can to the wire INSIDE the box trap. The can will hold your bait.

Now attach another piece of wire to the spring loaded arm of the rat trap. The wire should be long enough to reach the door. Attach a big nail to the wire at the door.

Drill a hole in the door. Now set the rat trap and use the nail to hold the door up.

If I did a good enough job explaining what you end up with is: When your rat trap is set and bait is in the can. The critter enters, tries to get the bait, trips the rat trap, rat trap pulls nail outta the door, door closes.

You'll need to experiment with the trap some. If you push the nail into the door to far your rat or mounse trap may not have the stenght to pull the nail out.

Let me know how it goes or if you have other questions.
